The Chronicle of the Buddhas

1.

The Section on the Jewel Walk

1.

Brahmā Sahampati, Lord of the World, with palms joined in reverence, made this request:

"There are beings here with little dust in their eyes, teach the Teaching out of compassion for this generation."

2.

For such a one perfect in true knowledge and conduct, radiant, bearing his final body,

The Truth Finder, the Incomparable Person, compassion arose for all beings.

3.

"Neither deities nor humans know what kind of supreme man this Enlightened One is;

What kind of power of spiritual power and power of wisdom, what kind of enlightened power of the world's welfare.

4.

"Neither deities nor humans know that this supreme man, the Enlightened One, is such;

Such is the power of spiritual power and power of wisdom, such is the enlightened power of the world's welfare.

5.

"Well then, I shall display the unsurpassed power of the Enlightened One;

I shall create a walking path in the sky, adorned with jewels."

6.

The earth deities, the Great King's deities, the Tāvatiṃsa deities, the Yāma deities, the Tusita deities, the Nimmāna deities;

The Paranimmita deities and those of Brahmā's host, delighted, made a mighty sound.

7.

The earth with its deities was illuminated, and many unenclosed world-interspaces;

And the dense darkness was then destroyed, having seen the wonderful marvel.

8.

Among deities, gandhabbas, human beings and demons, a magnificent and extensive light arose;

In this world and the next, in both, below, above and across, it spread.

9.

The supreme being, the unsurpassed guide, the Teacher, venerated by deities and humans;

Of great might, with the characteristics of a hundred merits, showed an amazing marvel.

10.

When requested by the excellent deity, the visionary, the supreme among men, having considered the purpose;

The Leader of the World created a walkway, well-constructed and made of all kinds of gems.

11.

The Blessed One was master of the three marvels: spiritual power, mind-reading and instruction;

The Leader of the World created a walkway, well-constructed and made of all kinds of gems.

12.

In the ten thousand world systems, on the summit of Mount Sineru;

He displayed pillars in sequence, on the jewel-made walkway.

13.

Going beyond the ten thousand, the Victor created a walkway;

All golden to be seen, on the jewel-made walkway.

14.

With balanced crossbeams in sequence, spread with golden planks;

Railings all of gold, were created on both sides.

15.

Strewn with jewels, pearls and sand, created of jewels;

It illuminates all directions, like the risen hundred-rayed sun.

16.

In that walkway the wise one, with the thirty-two excellent characteristics;

The radiant Enlightened One, the Victor walked on the walkway.

17.

Divine mandārava flowers, lotuses, and pārichattaka flowers;

All the gathered deities scattered on the walkway.

18.

The assemblies of deities from the ten thousand world systems see him, delighted;

They fall down paying homage, joyful, elated, and delighted.

19.

The Tāvatiṃsa deities, the Yāma deities, and the Tusita deities;

The Nimmānarati deities and the Vasavatti deities;

With uplifted mind and glad, they see the Leader of the World.

20.

Deities and gandhabbas, humans and demons, dragons and supaṇṇas and even kinnaras;

See him, compassionate for the welfare of the world, like the disc of the moon risen high in the sky.

21.

The Ābhassara deities, Subhakiṇha deities, Vehapphala deities and Akaniṭṭha deities;

Wearing very pure white garments, stand with reverential salutation.

22.

They release five-coloured flowers, mandārava mixed with sandalwood powder;

They wave cloths in the sky then, "Ah, the Victor, compassionate for the welfare of the world."

23.

"You are the teacher and the banner, the flag and the pillar for living beings;

The destination, the support, the island and the supreme among bipeds.

24.

"Deities of great spiritual power from the ten thousand world systems;

Having surrounded him pay homage, joyful, elated, and delighted.

25.

"Deities and celestial maidens, with confidence and joyful minds;

With flowers of five colours, honour the bull among men.

26.

"The assemblies of deities see him, with confidence and joyful minds;

With flowers of five colours, honour the bull among men.

27.

"Oh, wonderful in the world, marvellous and terrifying;

Never before had there been such a wonder, terrifying."

28.

Having sat down in their own existence, the deities;

They laugh a great laugh, having seen the wonder in the sky.

29.

Those in space and those on earth, those dwelling on paths and grass;

With reverential salutation pay homage, joyful, elated, and delighted.

30.

Even the long-lived dragons, meritorious with great spiritual powers;

Delighted, pay homage and venerate the supreme among men.

31.

They make music in the sky on the path of wind;

They play leather-bound drums, having seen the marvel in the sky.

32.

And conches and small drums, and also many kettle drums;

Sound in the atmosphere, having seen the marvel in the sky.

33.

Indeed a wonder has arisen for us today, causing terror;

We gain the stable attainment of the goal, the moment has been granted to us.

34.

Having heard 'Enlightened One' from them, rapture arose right then;

They stand with reverential salutation, speaking "Enlightened One, Enlightened One."

35.

Sounds of approval and exclamations of "Excellent!", cheering and rejoicing;

And various generations in the sky make reverential salutation.

36.

They sing and cry out and play music, clap their arms and dance;

They release five-coloured flowers, mandārava mixed with sandalwood powder.

37.

"Just as on your feet, O Great Hero, is the wheel mark;

With banner, thunderbolt and flag, adorned with the growing hook.

38.

"In form, virtuous behavior, concentration, and wisdom incomparable;

In liberation unequalled, in setting in motion the wheel of the Teaching.

39.

"The strength of ten bull elephants is your natural strength in the body;

Unequalled in spiritual power, in setting in motion the wheel of Teaching.

40.

"Thus endowed with all qualities, possessed of all factors,

The great sage, compassionate one, protector of the world, I honour.

41.

"Welcome and praise, reverence and admiration,

Homage and veneration, you deserve all.

42.

"Whoever in the world is worthy of reverence, whoever deserves reverence,

You are the highest of all, great hero, none is found equal to you.

43.

"Sāriputta of great wisdom, skilled in concentration and meditation;

Standing on Vulture Peak, sees the Leader of the World.

44.

"Like a fully blossomed royal sal tree, like the moon in the sky;

Like the sun at midday, he looked upon the bull among men.

45.

"Like a blazing lamp-tree, like the newly risen sun;

Adorned with fathom-wide radiance, he sees the wise Leader of the World.

46.

"Of five hundred monks, those who had done what had to be done, of such nature;

Those with taints destroyed and stainless, in an instant he assembled them.

47.

"He displayed the miracle named 'gladdening the world';

We too having gone there, will pay homage to the Victor.

48.

"Come all, let us go, we shall question the Victor;

We shall dispel perplexity, having seen the Leader of the World."

49.

Having agreed saying 'Very well,' alert, with restrained faculties;

Taking bowl and robe, they approached hurriedly.

50.

With those of destroyed taints, stainless ones, tamed with supreme taming;

Sāriputta of great wisdom, approached through spiritual power.

51.

Surrounded by those monks, Sāriputta, leader of a great group;

Like a deity playing in the sky, he approached through spiritual power.

52.

Disregarding coughing and spitting, those of good observance;

Reverential and deferential, approached the Enlightened One.

53.

Having approached, they saw the self-enlightened Leader of the World;

The wise one risen high in the sky, like the moon in the sky.

54.

Like a blazing lamp-tree, like lightning in the sky;

Like the sun at midday, they saw the Leader of the World.

55.

All five hundred monks saw the Leader of the World;

Like a clear lake, like a fully blossomed lotus.

56.

Having raised their hands in reverential salutation, joyful, elated, and delighted;

Paying homage they prostrate themselves, at the wheel-mark of the Teacher.

57.

Sāriputta of great wisdom, like a koraṇḍa flower;

Skilled in concentration and meditation, pays homage to the Leader of the World.

58.

Like a thundering rain cloud, similar to a blue water lily;

Unequalled in the power of spiritual power, Moggallāna of great spiritual power.

59.

And the Elder Mahākassapa too, resembling heated gold;

Foremost in ascetic qualities, praised and extolled by the Teacher.

60.

The chief among those with divine eye, Anuruddha of great following;

The noble kinsman of the Blessed One, stands not far away.

61.

Skilled in offences and non-offences, and in what can be cured;

Foremost in the discipline, Upāli praised by the Teacher.

62.

Having penetrated subtle and precise meaning, foremost among speakers, leader of the group;

The sage, Mantānī's son, well known by the name of Puṇṇa.

63.

Having known their minds, the sage skilled in similes;

The Great Hero, cutter of perplexity, spoke of his own qualities.

64.

"Those four are incalculable, their limit is not discerned;

The mass of beings and space, world-systems are endless;

The knowledge of the Enlightened One is immeasurable, these cannot be cognized.

65.

"What is this wonder in the world, this display of my spiritual power;

There are many other wonders, marvels that cause terror.

66.

"When I was in the Tusita realm, then I was named Santusita;

Ten thousand gathered together, making reverential salutation to me.

67.

"'It is time, O Great Hero, arise in a mother's womb;

Leading across the world with its deities, awaken to the term of the Deathless.

68.

"Having fallen from the Tusita realm, when he descended into the womb;

The ten thousand world systems and the earth shook then.

69.

"When I emerged from my mother's womb, clearly comprehending;

They proclaimed their approval, and ten thousand worlds shook.

70.

"None equals me in descent, in birth and going forth;

I am supreme in enlightenment and in setting in motion the wheel of the Teaching.

71.

"Oh, wonderful in the world, the greatness of the qualities of the Enlightened Ones;

The ten-thousand world system shook in six ways;

And there was a great light, a wonder that was terrifying".

72.

The Blessed One at that time, foremost in the world, bull among men;

The Victor walked with spiritual power, showing it to the world with its deities.

73.

While walking on the walking path, the Leader of the World spoke;

He did not turn back in between, just as on a four-cubit walking path.

74.

Sāriputta of great wisdom, skilled in concentration and meditation;

Having attained perfection in wisdom, asks the Leader of the World.

75.

"What sort of resolution did you have, O Great Hero, Supreme among men;

At what time, O Wise One, did you aspire for supreme enlightenment.

76.

"What were your giving, virtue and renunciation, wisdom and energy like;

What were your patience, truth, determination, loving-kindness and equanimity like.

77.

"What were your ten perfections like, O Wise One, Leader of the World;

How were the higher perfections fulfilled, how the ultimate perfections."

78.

When questioned, he with voice as sweet as the karavika bird explained,

Cooling the heart, making the world with its deities rejoice.

79.

The Teaching proclaimed by past Enlightened Ones, the Victorious Ones, transmitted through the lineage of the Enlightened Ones;

Through knowledge connected with past lives, he revealed it for the welfare of the world with its deities.

80.

"Creating rapture and gladness, removing the dart of sorrow;

Bringing success in all things, honour it and listen to me.

81.

"Crushing intoxication and dispelling sorrow, freeing from the round of rebirths;

The path to the destruction of all suffering, enter upon it with respect."

The section on the Jewelled Walk is finished.

2.

The Talk on Sumedha's Aspiration

1.

A hundred thousand aeons and four incalculable aeons ago;

There was a city named Amara, beautiful and delightful to see.

2.

Not free from ten kinds of sounds, filled with food and drink;

The sound of elephants, the sound of horses, drums, conches, and chariots;

"Eat and drink," resounding with food and drink.

3.

A city complete in all factors, endowed with all activities;

Endowed with the seven treasures, crowded with various people;

Prosperous like a city of deities, an abode of those who do meritorious deeds.

4.

In the city of Amaravatī, there was a brahmin named Sumedha;

With many crores accumulated, abundant in wealth and grain.

5.

A reciter, a master of the mantras, accomplished in the three Vedas;

In characteristics and histories, gone to perfection in the true Teaching.

6.

Having sat in seclusion, I thought thus then;

"Renewed existence is suffering, and there is breaking up of the body.

7.

"Subject to birth, subject to aging, subject to sickness was I then;

The ageless, the Deathless, security, I will seek quenching.

8.

"What if I were to abandon this putrid body,

Filled with various corpses, and go forth, without concern or desire.

9.

"There will be that path, it cannot not be because of a reason;

I will seek that path for freedom from existence.

10.

"Just as when there is suffering, there is also what is called happiness;

Even so when there is existence, non-existence too should be desired.

11.

"Just as when there is heat, there exists also coolness;

Even so when the threefold fire exists, Nibbāna should be desired.

12.

"Just as when there is evil, there is also good;

Even so when birth exists, non-birth too should be desired.

13.

"Just as when a person fallen in filth, seeing a full lake,

Does not seek that lake, that is not the lake's fault.

14.

"Even so when stained with the defilements' stain, while the Deathless lake exists,

One does not seek that lake, that is not the Deathless lake's fault.

15.

"Just as when one is surrounded by enemies, while there exists a path to go,

That person does not flee, that is not the path's fault.

16.

"Even so when surrounded by defilements, while the auspicious path exists,

One does not seek that path, that is not the auspicious path's fault.

17.

"Just as a sick person, when there is a doctor;

Does not get that illness treated, that is not the doctor's fault.

18.

"Thus afflicted and oppressed by the illness of defilements;

One does not seek that teacher, that is not the guide's fault.

19.

"Just as a person, disgusted by a corpse bound to their neck;

Would release it and go, happy, independent and self-controlled.

20.

"Just so this putrid body, a collection of various corpses;

Filled with various corpses, and go forth, without concern or desire.

21.

"Just as men and women at a toilet, excrement;

Having cast it aside they go, without concern or desire.

22.

"Just so I this body, filled with various corpses;

Having cast it aside I shall go, like a hut after defecating.

23.

"Just as a decrepit boat, broken and taking on water;

The owners cast it aside and go, without concern or desire.

24.

"Just so I this body, with nine holes constantly leaking;

Having cast it aside I shall go, like owners a worn-out boat.

25.

"Just as a person going with thieves, having taken goods;

Seeing the fear of losing the goods, having cast them aside goes.

26.

"Just so this body, like a great thief;

Having abandoned this I shall go, from fear of losing the wholesome."

27.

Having reflected thus, many hundreds of millions in wealth;

Having given to those with and without a protector, I went to the Himalayas.

28.

Not far from the Himalayas, there was a mountain called Dhammika;

My hermitage was well-made, a leaf-hut well-built.

29.

There I built a walking path, free from five faults;

Endowed with eight qualities, I attained the power of direct knowledge.

30.

There I abandoned my cloth which had nine faults;

I wore bark garments, which possessed twelve qualities.

31.

I abandoned the leaf-hut filled with eight faults;

I went to the foot of a tree, which possessed ten qualities.

32.

I abandoned without remainder the sown and planted grain;

I took fruits that had fallen, endowed with many qualities.

33.

There I strove with striving, in sitting, standing, and walking;

Within seven days, I attained the power of direct knowledge.

34.

Thus for me who had attained success, who had mastered the Dispensation;

The Victor named Dīpaṅkara arose, leader of the world.

35.

When they were arising and being born, awakening at the teaching of the Teaching;

I did not see the four signs, absorbed in the delight of meditation.

36.

Having invited the Truth Finder, to a border region domain;

With joyful minds they cleared, the path for his coming.

37.

At that time, having left my own home;

Shaking my bark garments, I was going through the sky then.

38.

Seeing people inspired by the scriptures, pleased, delighted and joyful;

Having descended from the sky, I asked the human beings right then.

39.

"Pleased, delighted and joyful, the great assembly inspired by the scriptures;

For whom is the path being cleared, the straight road being prepared?"

40.

When asked by me they explained, "The unsurpassed Enlightened One in the world;

The Victor named Dīpaṅkara arose, leader of the world;

For him the path is being cleared, the straight road being prepared."

41.

Having heard the word 'Enlightened One', rapture arose right then;

Saying 'Buddha, Buddha', I experienced joy.

42.

Standing there I reflected, delighted with stirred mind;

"Here I will plant seeds, let not the opportunity pass by.

43.

"If you will clean it for the Enlightened One, give me one place;

I too will clean the path that leads to the town".

44.

They gave me a place then to clean the path;

Thinking 'Buddha, Buddha', I cleaned the path then.

45.

When my place was not yet finished, Dīpaṅkara the great sage;

With four hundred thousand with the six direct knowledges, such ones;

With the taintless ones unstained, the Victor set out on the path.

46.

There are welcoming processions, many drums sound;

Delighted humans and deities proclaimed their approval.

47.

Deities see human beings, and human beings see deities;

Both with reverential salutation, follow the Truth Finder.

48.

Deities with divine instruments, and humans with human ones;

Both playing these, follow the Truth Finder.

49.

Divine mandārava flowers, lotuses, and pārichattaka flowers;

The deities dwelling in the sky scatter in all directions.

50.

Divine sandalwood powder, and the consummate excellent fragrance;

The deities dwelling in the sky scatter in all directions.

51.

Campaka, pine, nīpa, ironwood, punnāga and ketaka;

The people dwelling on the ground toss them in all directions.

52.

Having loosened my hair there, and my bark garment and deerskin,

Having spread them in the mud, I lay face downward.

53.

"May the Enlightened One step upon me and go with his disciples;

Let him not step in the mud, it will be for my welfare."

54.

As I lay on the earth, this thought occurred to me:

"If I wish today, I could burn up my defilements.

55.

"What use is it for me to realize the Teaching here in disguise;

Having attained omniscience, I will become an Enlightened One in the world with its deities.

56.

"What use is it for me alone to cross over, a person showing strength;

Having attained omniscience, I will help the world with its deities cross over.

57.

"Through this service done by me to the highest person;

Having attained omniscience, I will help many people cross over.

58.

"Having cut off the stream of saṃsāra, having destroyed the three kinds of existence;

Having embarked on the ship of the Teaching, I will help the world with its deities cross over."

59.

Human state, success of gender, cause, seeing the Teacher;

Going forth, success in qualities, service and zeal;

Through the combination of eight things, the resolution succeeds.

60.

Dīpaṅkara, knower of the world, receiver of offerings;

Having stood at my head, spoke these words.

61.

"Look at this ascetic, with matted hair, of intense austerity;

After an immeasurable aeon, he will become a Buddha in the world.

62.

"The Truth Finder, having departed from delightful Kapila,

Having strived in striving, having performed austerities;

63.

"The Truth Finder having sat down at the foot of the Ajapāla tree;

Taking the milk-rice there, he will go to the Nerañjara.

64.

"That victor at the bank of the Nerañjara, gave the milk-rice;

By the prepared noble path, he will go to the foot of the Bodhi tree.

65.

"Then having circumambulated the unsurpassed ground of enlightenment;

At the foot of the Assattha tree, the greatly famous one will become enlightened.

66.

"His birth mother will be named Māyā;

His father will be named Suddhodana, he will be Gotama.

67.

"Taintless, free from lust, peaceful in mind, concentrated;

Kolita and Upatissa will be the chief disciples;

Named Ānanda as attendant, he will attend upon me, the victor.

68.

"Khemā and Uppalavaṇṇā will be the chief female disciples;

Taintless, free from lust, peaceful in mind, concentrated;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One is declared to be the Assattha.

69.

"Citta and Hatthāḷavaka will be the chief male lay followers;

Uttarā and Nandamātā will be the chief female lay followers."

70.

Having heard these words of the peerless great sage;

Delighted humans and deities, this indeed is the seed of enlightenment.

71.

Sounds of acclamation arise, they clap and laugh;

With reverential salutation they pay homage, the ten thousand worlds with their deities.

72.

"If we miss the Dispensation, of this Lord of the World;

In the future course of time, we will be present before him.

73.

"Just as human beings crossing a river, missing the opposite landing place;

Taking a lower landing place, cross over the great river.

74.

"Even so all of us, if we miss this Victor;

In the future course of time, we will be present before him."

75.

Dīpaṅkara, knower of the world, receiver of offerings;

Having proclaimed my action, raised his right foot.

76.

Those victor's sons who were there, circumambulated me;

Deities, human beings and titans, having paid homage, departed.

77.

When the leader of the world with his Community had passed beyond my sight;

Having risen from my bed, I then sat cross-legged.

78.

I was happy with happiness, gladdened with gladness;

And overflowing with rapture, I then sat cross-legged.

79.

Having sat cross-legged, I thought thus then;

"I have mastered meditation, reached perfection in direct knowledge.

80.

"In a world-system of a thousand worlds, there are no sages equal to me;

Unequalled in spiritual powers, I obtained such happiness.

81.

"At my cross-legged sitting, the ten thousand world-dwellers

Raised a great cry, 'You will certainly become an Enlightened One.

82.

"'When previous aspirants for Buddhahood sat on the excellent cross-legged seat,

Signs appear, those appear today.

83.

"'Cold disappears, and heat subsides;

Those appear today, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

84.

"'The ten-thousand world-systems become soundless and undisturbed;

Those appear today, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

85.

"'Great winds do not blow, and streams do not flow;

Those appear today, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

86.

"'Land and water flowers, all bloom then;

All those have bloomed today, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

87.

"'Whether creepers or trees, all become laden with fruit then;

All those have borne fruit today, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

88.

"'Those in space and those on earth, the jewels shine right then;

Those jewels shine today, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

89.

"'Both human and divine music plays right then;

Both resound today, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

90.

"'Various flowers from the sky pour down right then;

Those too rain down today, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

91.

"'The great ocean surges, the ten thousand worlds shake;

Both resound today, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

92.

"'In ten thousand hells, the fires are quenched right then;

The fires are quenched today, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

93.

"'The sun is spotless, all the stars are seen;

Those appear today, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

94.

"Without rain the water, burst forth from the earth right then;

That bursts forth from the earth today, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

95.

"The constellations shine, the stars in the circle of the sky;

The moon is joined with Visākhā, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

96.

"Those dwelling in holes and caves, come out from their abodes;

Those abodes are empty today, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

97.

"There is no discontent among beings, they are content right then;

All those are content today, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

98.

"Illnesses then subside, and hunger perishes;

Those appear today, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

99.

"'Lust becomes thin then, hatred and delusion are destroyed;

All those are gone today, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

100.

"'Fear does not exist then, this appears today;

By this sign we know, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

101.

"'Dust swirls upward, this appears today;

By this sign we know, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

102.

"'The disagreeable odour departs, a divine fragrance wafts forth;

That odour wafts today, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

103.

"'All deities appear, except for the formless ones;

All those appear today, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

104.

As far as the hells, all appear right then;

All those appear today, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

105.

Walls, doors, and rocks are not obstructions then;

Those have become space today, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

106.

Passing away and rebirth are not found at that moment;

Those appear today, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.

107.

'Take up firm energy, do not turn back, go forward;

We too know this, you will certainly become an Enlightened One.'

108.

Having heard the Buddha's word, both from the ten thousand,

Pleased, joyful and delighted, I thought thus then.

109.

"The Enlightened Ones' words are not duplicitous, the Victors' words are not empty;

There is no falsehood in the Enlightened Ones, surely I will become an Enlightened One.

110.

"Just as a clod thrown in the sky surely falls to the ground,

So too the word of the best of Enlightened Ones is stable and eternal;

There is no falsehood in the Enlightened Ones, surely I will become an Enlightened One.

111.

"Just as for all beings death is stable and eternal,

So too the word of the best of Enlightened Ones is stable and eternal;

There is no falsehood in the Enlightened Ones, surely I will become an Enlightened One.

112.

"Just as when night ends, the sunrise is certain,

So too the word of the best of Enlightened Ones is stable and eternal;

There is no falsehood in the Enlightened Ones, surely I will become an Enlightened One.

113.

"Just as the roar of a lion leaving its lair is certain,

So too the word of the best of Enlightened Ones is stable and eternal;

There is no falsehood in the Enlightened Ones, surely I will become an Enlightened One.

114.

"As for beings in trouble, the laying down of burdens is certain;

So too the word of the best of Enlightened Ones is stable and eternal;

There is no falsehood in the Enlightened Ones, surely I will become an Enlightened One.

115.

"Come, I shall search here and there for the qualities that make an Enlightened One;

Above, below, in the ten directions, as far as the sphere of the Teaching."

Searching then, I saw first the perfection of giving;

The great path followed by the great seers of old.

117.

"First of all, you should take this up firmly;

Go to the perfection of giving, if you wish to attain enlightenment.

118.

"Just as a full water pot, when turned upside down by anyone,

Pours out water completely, not keeping any there.

119.

"Just so, seeing supplicants - low, excellent, or middling -

Give gifts completely, like a pot turned upside down.

120.

"These are not the only qualities of enlightenment there will be;

I shall search for other states that ripen into enlightenment."

121.

Searching then, I saw the second, the perfection of virtuous behavior;

Frequented and resorted to by the great seers of old.

122.

"Second of all, you should take this up firmly;

Go to the perfection of virtue, if you wish to attain enlightenment.

123.

"Just as when a yak's tail is caught on something,

It would die there rather than damage its tail.

124.

"Just so you should fulfil the virtues in the four planes,

Always protect virtue, like a yak its tail.

125.

"These are not the only qualities of enlightenment there will be;

I shall search for other states that ripen into enlightenment."

126.

Searching then, I saw the third, the perfection of renunciation;

Frequented and resorted to by the great seers of old.

127.

"Third of all, you should take this up firmly;

Go to the perfection of renunciation, if you wish to attain enlightenment.

128.

"Just as a person in a prison, having lived there long, afflicted with suffering,

Does not generate lust there, but seeks only freedom.

129.

"Just so you in all existence, see it like a prison;

Be oriented towards renunciation, for complete freedom from existence.

130.

"These are not the only qualities of enlightenment there will be;

I shall search for other states that ripen into enlightenment."

131.

Searching then, I saw the fourth, the perfection of wisdom;

Frequented and resorted to by the great seers of old.

132.

"Fourth of all, you should take this up firmly;

Go to the perfection of wisdom, if you wish to attain enlightenment.

133.

"Just as a monk searching among the low, superior, and middling;

Not avoiding families, thus one obtains sustenance.

134.

"Just so you at all times, questioning wise people;

Having gone to the perfection of wisdom, you will attain enlightenment.

135.

"These are not the only qualities of enlightenment there will be;

I shall search for other states that ripen into enlightenment."

136.

Searching then, I saw the fifth, the perfection of energy;

Frequented and resorted to by the great seers of old.

137.

"Fifth of all, you should take this up firmly;

Go to the perfection of energy, if you wish to attain enlightenment.

138.

"Just as the lion, king of beasts, in sitting, standing and walking,

Has unwavering energy, with an uplifted mind always.

139.

"Just so you in all existence, raise up firm energy;

Having gone to the perfection of energy, you will attain enlightenment.

140.

"These are not the only qualities of enlightenment there will be;

I shall search for other states that ripen into enlightenment."

141.

Searching then, I saw the sixth, the perfection of patience;

Frequented and resorted to by the great seers of old.

142.

"Sixth of all, you should take this up firmly;

With undivided mind in that, you will attain enlightenment.

143.

"Just as the earth indeed, both the pure and impure;

Bears all that is cast upon it, without showing aversion to them.

144.

"Just so you too, patient with all respect and disrespect;

Having gone to the perfection of patience, you will attain enlightenment.

145.

"These are not the only qualities of enlightenment there will be;

I shall search for other states that ripen into enlightenment."

146.

Searching then, I saw the seventh, the perfection of truth;

Frequented and resorted to by the great seers of old.

147.

"Seventh of all, you should take this up firmly;

Being of undivided speech therein, you will attain enlightenment.

148.

"Just as medicine, being like a balance in the world with its deities;

In season or during the rains, does not deviate from its course.

149.

"Just so you too in regard to truths, do not deviate from the course;

Having gone to the perfection of truth, you will attain enlightenment.

150.

"These are not the only qualities of enlightenment there will be;

I shall search for other states that ripen into enlightenment."

151.

Searching then, I saw the eighth, the perfection of determination;

Frequented and resorted to by the great seers of old.

152.

"Eighth of all, you should take this up firmly;

There being unshakeable, you will attain enlightenment.

153.

"Just as a rocky mountain, unshakeable, well established;

Is not shaken by strong winds, but stands in its own place.

154.

"Just so you too in resolution, be unshakeable always;

Having gone to the perfection of resolution, you will attain enlightenment.

155.

"These are not the only qualities of enlightenment there will be;

I shall search for other states that ripen into enlightenment."

156.

Searching then, I saw the ninth, the perfection of loving-kindness;

Frequented and resorted to by the great seers of old.

157.

"Ninth of all, you should take this up firmly;

Be unequalled in loving-kindness, if you wish to attain enlightenment.

158.

"Just as water treats both good and bad people;

It pervades evenly with coolness, and washes away dust and stains.

159.

"Just so you, in welfare and harm, develop loving-kindness evenly;

Having gone to the perfection of loving-kindness, you will attain enlightenment.

160.

"These are not the only qualities of enlightenment there will be;

I shall search for other states that ripen into enlightenment."

161.

Searching then, I saw the tenth, the perfection of equanimity;

Frequented and resorted to by the great seers of old.

162.

"Tenth of all, you should take this up firmly;

Being firm like a balance, you will attain enlightenment.

163.

"Just as the earth indeed, both the impure and pure that are thrown upon it;

Looks on both with equanimity, free from anger and attraction.

164.

"Just so you should always be balanced in pleasure and pain;

Having gone to the perfection of equanimity, you will attain enlightenment.

165.

"Just these in the world are the states that ripen into enlightenment;

There is nothing beyond these, be firmly established in that."

166.

When exploring these states with their nature, taste and characteristics,

Through the power of the Teaching, the earth with its ten thousand spheres trembled.

167.

The earth shakes and resounds like a squeezed sugarcane press,

Like a wheel in an oil press, so the earth trembles.

168.

As far as the assembly extended at the Buddha's service,

Trembling there, she lies unconscious on the ground.

169.

Many thousands of pots, and many hundreds of vessels;

Were crushed and broken there, having collided with one another.

170.

Anxious, agitated, frightened, confused and troubled in mind;

A great crowd having gathered, they approached Dīpaṅkara.

171.

"What will happen to the world, good or evil?

The whole world is afflicted, dispel this, O Vision-endowed One."

172.

Then Dīpaṅkara the great sage reassured them;

"Be confident, do not be afraid, in this earthquake.

173.

"The one whom I declared today will become a Buddha in the world;

He explores the Teaching, practised by previous Victors.

174.

"As he explores the Teaching, the plane of Buddhahood completely;

Therefore this earth shook, the ten thousand worlds with their deities".

175.

Having heard the Buddha's word, the mind was immediately quenched;

All approached me and paid homage again.

176.

Having undertaken the virtues of the Enlightened One, making the mind firm;

Having paid homage to Dīpaṅkara, I then rose from my seat.

177.

Divine and human flowers, both deities and humans;

Showered flowers as I rose from my seat.

178.

Both deities and humans express their well-wishes;

"Great is your aspiration, may you obtain it as desired.

179.

"May all calamities be avoided, may sorrow and illness be destroyed;

May there be no obstacles for you, quickly touch supreme enlightenment.

180.

"Just as flowering trees bloom when the season comes;

Just so you great hero, you flower with enlightened knowledge.

181.

"Just as whatever Enlightened Ones, fulfilled the ten perfections;

Just so you great hero, fulfill the ten perfections.

182.

"Just as whatever Enlightened Ones, were enlightened at the seat of enlightenment;

Just so you great hero, be enlightened at the victor's enlightenment.

183.

"Just as whatever Enlightened Ones, set rolling the wheel of the Teaching;

Just so you great hero, set rolling the wheel of the Teaching.

184.

"Just as on the full moon night, the moon shines pure;

Just so you with full mind, shine in the ten-thousand fold world.

185.

"Just as the sun released from Rāhu, outshines with its heat;

Just so, released from the world, you shine with glory.

186.

"Just as whatever rivers, flow into the great ocean;

"Thus may the worlds with their deities draw near to you."

187.

Praised and extolled by them, he undertook ten things;

Fulfilling those things, he then entered the wilds.

The Talk on Sumedha's Aspiration is concluded.

3.

The Chronicle of the Buddha Dīpaṅkara

1.

Then having fed the Leader of the World with the Community;

They went for refuge to that Teacher Dīpaṅkara.

2.

The Truth Finder established some in going to refuge;

Some in the five precepts, others in the ten kinds of virtuous behavior.

3.

To some he gives recluseship, the four supreme fruits;

To some he gives the analytical knowledges, the incomparable states.

4.

To some the bull among men gives the eight excellent attainments;

To some the three true knowledges, he bestows the six direct knowledges.

5.

Through that exertion the great sage exhorts the multitude;

Through that the Protector of the World's Dispensation became widespread.

6.

Having a great jaw and shoulders, named Dīpaṅkara;

He leads across many people, liberates them from bad destinations.

7.

Having seen people ready for enlightenment even a hundred thousand yojanas away;

Having approached in an instant, the great sage enlightens them.

8.

In the first breakthrough, the Enlightened One enlightened a hundred crores;

In the second breakthrough, the protector enlightened ninety crores.

9.

When the Enlightened One taught the Teaching in the abode of deities;

For ninety thousand crores there was the third breakthrough.

10.

There were three gatherings of the Teacher Dīpaṅkara;

The first assembly was of a hundred thousand crores.

11.

Again when the Victor had gone into seclusion at Nāradakūṭa;

A hundred crores with taints destroyed and stains removed attained peace.

12.

At the time when the great hero was at Mount Sudassana;

The great sage concluded the rains-retreat with ninety thousand crores.

13.

There was a breakthrough of the Teaching for thirty thousand;

The breakthroughs for one or two were beyond numerical reckoning.

14.

Then the Dispensation of the Blessed One Dīpaṅkara was widespread, known to many, prosperous and flourishing;

The Dispensation of the Blessed One Dīpaṅkara was well purified.

15.

Four hundred thousand with six direct knowledges and great spiritual power;

Surrounded Dīpaṅkara, the knower of worlds, always.

16.

Whoever at that time abandoned human existence;

Those trainees with unfulfilled intentions became blamed.

17.

The Teaching was in full flower with such Arahants;

With those whose taints were destroyed and stainless, it was always resplendent.

18.

The city was named Rammavatī, the noble was named Sudeva;

The mother was named Sumedhā, of the Teacher Dīpaṅkara.

19.

For ten thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Haṃsa, Koñca, and Mayūra were the three excellent palaces.

20.

Three hundred thousand women, adorned;

The woman was named Padumā, his son was Usabhakkhandha.

21.

Having seen the four signs, he departed on an elephant vehicle;

For no less than ten months, the Victor engaged in striving.

22.

Having practised the course of striving, the sage awakened his mind;

Being requested by Brahmā, Dīpaṅkara the great sage.

23.

The Great Hero turned the wheel at Nandārāma in the glorious house;

Seated at the root of a sirīsa tree, made the crushing of the sectarians.

24.

Sumaṅgala and Tissa, were the chief disciples;

Sāgata by name was the attendant, of the Teacher Dīpaṅkara.

25.

Nandā and Sunandā, were the chief female disciples;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One, is declared to be the Pipphali.

26.

Tapussa and Bhallika by name, were the chief supporters;

Sirimā and Koṇā were the female supporters, of the Teacher Dīpaṅkara.

27.

Eighty cubits in height was Dīpaṅkara the great sage;

He shone like a lamp-tree, like a blossoming king of sal trees.

28.

A hundred thousand years was the life span of that great sage;

Remaining for that long, he led many people across.

29.

Having illuminated the true Teaching, having led the masses across,

Having blazed like a mass of fire, he was quenched with his disciples.

30.

That spiritual power and that fame, and those wheel-marks on his feet;

All that has disappeared, indeed, all formations are empty.

31.

The Victor, Teacher Dīpaṅkara was quenched in the Nanda monastery;

Right there his victor's shrine was thirty-six yojanas in height.

The lineage of the Blessed One Dīpaṅkara is first.

4.

The Chronicle of the Enlightened One Koṇḍañña

1.

After Dīpaṅkara, there was a leader named Koṇḍañña;

Of endless heat, of boundless fame, immeasurable, hard to approach.

2.

Like the earth in patience, like the ocean in virtue;

Like Mount Meru in concentration, like the sky in knowledge.

3.

The faculties, powers, enlightenment factors, path and truths explanation;

The Enlightened One always explained, for the welfare of all living beings.

4.

When Koṇḍañña, Leader of the World, was setting in motion the Wheel of Teaching;

For a hundred thousand crores, there was the first breakthrough.

5.

Then further as he taught, in the assembly of humans and deities;

For ninety thousand crores, there was the second breakthrough.

6.

When he taught the Teaching, crushing the sectarians;

For eighty thousand crores, there was the third breakthrough.

7.

There were three gatherings of the great sage Koṇḍañña;

Of those with taints destroyed, the stainless ones, those of peaceful mind, such as they are.

8.

The first assembly was of a hundred thousand crores;

The second of a thousand crores, the third of ninety crores.

9.

I was at that time, a noble named Vijitāvī;

I exercise authority over the ocean from end to end.

10.

A hundred thousand crores of stainless great seekers;

Together with the Leader, foremost in the world, I satisfied with excellent food.

11.

That Buddha too, Koṇḍañña, Leader of the World, declared of me;

"After an immeasurable aeon, he will become a Buddha in the world.

12.

"Having strived in striving, having performed austerities;

At the foot of the Assattha tree, the greatly famous one will become an Enlightened One.

13.

"His birth mother will be named Māyā;

His father will be named Suddhodana, he will be Gotama.

14.

"Kolita and Upatissa will be the chief disciples;

Named Ānanda as attendant, he will attend upon me, the victor.

15.

"Khemā and Uppalavaṇṇā will be the chief female disciples;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One is declared to be the Assattha.

16.

"Citta and Hatthāḷavaka will be the chief male lay followers;

Nandamātā and Uttarā will be the chief female lay followers;

"The life span is a hundred years, of that glorious Gotama."

17.

Having heard these words of the peerless great sage;

Delighted humans and deities, this indeed is the seed of enlightenment.

18.

Sounds of acclamation arise, they clap and laugh;

With reverential salutation they pay homage, the ten thousand deities.

19.

"If we miss the Dispensation, of this Lord of the World;

In the future course of time, we will be present before him.

20.

"Just as human beings crossing a river, missing the opposite landing place;

Taking a lower landing place, cross over the great river.

21.

"Even so all of us, if we miss this Victor;

In the future course of time, we will be present before him."

22.

Having heard his word, I made my mind even more confident;

Accomplishing that very purpose, I gave the great kingdom to the Victor;

Having given up the great monarchy, I went forth in his presence.

23.

The discourses and the discipline too, the Teacher's nine-factored Dispensation;

Having mastered all, I illuminated the Victor's Teaching.

24.

Dwelling there diligently, in sitting, standing and walking;

Having gone to the perfection of direct knowledge, I went to the brahmā world.

25.

The city was named Rammavatī, the noble was named Sunanda;

The mother named Sujātā, of Koṇḍañña the great seer.

26.

For ten thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Suci, Suruci, and Subha were the three excellent palaces.

27.

Three hundred thousand women, adorned;

The woman was named Rucidevī, Vijitasena was his son.

28.

Having seen the four signs, he departed on a chariot vehicle;

For no less than ten months, the Victor engaged in striving.

29.

Being requested by Brahmā, Koṇḍañña, supreme among bipeds;

The Great Hero turned the wheel in the supreme city of deities.

30.

Bhadda and Subhadda, were the chief disciples;

Anuruddha was the attendant of Koṇḍañña, the great sage.

31.

Tissā and Upatissā, were the chief female disciples;

The Sāla tree was the enlightenment tree of Koṇḍañña, the great sage.

32.

Soṇa and Upasoṇa, were the chief male supporters;

Nandā and Sirimā, were the chief female supporters.

33.

That great sage was eighty-eight cubits tall;

He shone like the moon-king and like the sun at midday.

34.

A hundred thousand years, life span existed right then;

Remaining for that long, he led many people across.

35.

The earth was adorned with those whose taints were destroyed and who were stainless;

As the sky with stars, thus he shone.

36.

Those immeasurable arahants, unshakeable, hard to approach;

Having shown like a flash of lightning, those of great fame were quenched.

37.

And that incomparable spiritual power of the Victor, and concentration developed through knowledge;

All that has disappeared, indeed, all formations are empty.

38.

The excellent Enlightened One Koṇḍañña was quenched in the Candārāma;

Right there the shrine was bright, raised up seven yojanas.

This is the second lineage, of the Blessed One Koṇḍañña.

5.

The Chronicle of the Buddha Maṅgala

1.

After Koṇḍañña, there was a leader named Maṅgala;

Having destroyed darkness in the world, he held up the torch of the Teaching.

2.

His radiance was incomparable, superior to other conquerors;

Surpassing the light of moon and sun, it illuminated ten thousand worlds.

3.

That Buddha too revealed the four supreme noble truths;

Having drunk the taste of truth, they dispel the great darkness.

4.

Having attained incomparable enlightenment, in the first teaching;

For a hundred thousand crores there was the breakthrough of the Teaching.

5.

The Enlightened One taught the Teaching in the abode of Surinda deity;

Then for a thousand crores there was the second occasion.

6.

When Sunanda the wheel-turning monarch approached the Enlightened One;

Then the Enlightened One struck the excellent supreme drum of the Teaching.

7.

The people who were followers of Sunanda were ninety crores;

All of them without exception were monks who had come at his invitation.

8.

There were three gatherings of the great sage Maṅgala;

The first assembly was of a hundred thousand crores.

9.

The second was of a hundred thousand crores, the third of ninety crores;

Then was the assembly of those with taints destroyed and stainless.

10.

I was at that time a brahmin named Surucī;

"A reciter, a master of the mantras, accomplished in the three Vedas;

11.

Having approached that, having gone for refuge to the Teacher;

I honoured the Community headed by the Enlightened One with garlands and odours;

Having honoured with garlands and odours, I satisfied with milk to drink.

12.

That Buddha too, Maṅgala, supreme among bipeds, declared of me;

"In an immeasurable aeon from now, he will become an Enlightened One.

13.

"Having strived in striving...etc... we will be present before him."

14.

Having heard his word too, I made my mind even more confident;

I determined on a further vow, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections.

15.

Then cultivating rapture, for the attainment of supreme enlightenment;

Having given my house to the Enlightened One, I went forth in his presence.

16.

The discourses and the discipline too, the Teacher's nine-factored Dispensation;

Having mastered all, I adorned the Victor's Teaching.

17.

Dwelling there diligently, having developed the divine development;

Having gone to the perfection of direct knowledge, I went to the brahmā world.

18.

There was a city named Uttara, a noble named Uttara;

The birth mother of the Great Sage Maṅgala was named Uttarā.

19.

For nine thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Famous, pure and resplendent, there were three supreme mansions.

20.

Thirty thousand women, adorned;

A woman named Yasavatī, a son named Sīvala.

21.

Having seen the four signs, he departed on a horse vehicle;

For no less than eight months, the Victor engaged in striving.

22.

Being requested by Brahmā, a leader named Maṅgala;

The Great Hero turned the wheel in the supreme glorious grove.

23.

Sudeva and Dhammasena, were the chief disciples;

Pālita by name was the attendant, of Maṅgala the great sage.

24.

Sīvalā and Asokā, were the chief female disciples;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One, is declared to be the Nāga tree.

25.

Nanda and Visākha, were the chief male supporters;

Anulā and Sutanā, were the chief female supporters.

26.

Eighty-eight cubits tall, risen up was the great sage;

From there rays streamed forth, by many hundred thousands.

27.

Ninety thousand years, life span existed right then;

Remaining for that long, he led many people across.

28.

Like waves in the ocean, they cannot be counted;

Even so his disciples cannot be counted.

29.

As long as the Enlightened One Mangala, leader of the world, remained;

In his Dispensation there was no death with defilements then.

30.

Having held up the torch of Teaching, having helped the masses cross over;

Having blazed like a comet, that one of great fame was quenched.

31.

Having shown the true nature and meaning of formations, in the world with its deities;

Having blazed like a mass of fire, just as the sun has set.

32.

In the park named Vassara, the Enlightened One Maṅgala attained final Nibbāna;

Right there his victor's monument, rose up thirty yojanas.

This is the third chronicle of the Blessed One Maṅgala.

6.

The Chronicle of the Enlightened One Sumana

1.

After Maṅgala, there was a leader named Sumana;

Unequalled in all things, supreme among all beings.

2.

Then he beat the deathless drum, in the city of Mekhala;

Connected with reckoning of the Teaching, the Victor's nine-factored Dispensation.

3.

Having conquered the defilements, having attained supreme enlightenment;

The Teacher created a city, the supreme city of the true Teaching.

4.

Uninterrupted, not crooked, straight, vast and wide;

He created the great highway, the supreme establishment of mindfulness.

5.

The four fruits of asceticism, the four analytical knowledges;

The six direct knowledges and eight attainments, he laid out there on the highway.

6.

Those who are diligent, free from barrenness, endowed with shame and energy;

They take up those excellent qualities as they wish.

7.

Thus by this exertion, uplifting the masses;

The Teacher first enlightened a hundred thousand crores.

8.

At the time when the great hero exhorted groups of sectarians;

A thousand crores had breakthrough at the second teaching.

9.

When deities and human beings, in concord and single-minded;

Asked questions about cessation, and also mental doubts.

10.

Then too at the teaching, explaining cessation;

For ninety thousand crores there was the third breakthrough.

11.

There were three gatherings of the great sage Sumana;

Of those with taints destroyed, the stainless ones, those of peaceful mind, such as they are.

12.

When the Blessed One had completed the Rains Retreat, at the proclaimed Invitation,

The Truth Finder held the ceremony with a hundred thousand crores.

13.

After that gathering, on the stainless golden mountain,

There was a second assembly of ninety thousand crores.

14.

When Sakka, king of deities, came to see the Buddha;

The third assembly was of eighty thousand crores.

15.

I was at that time a dragon king of great spiritual power;

Named Atula by name, with an accumulation of wholesome deeds.

16.

Then I left the dragon realm with my relatives;

With celestial music of dragons, I attended upon the Victor with his Community.

17.

I satisfied a hundred thousand crores with food and drink;

Having given a pair of robes to each, I went to him for refuge.

18.

That Buddha too, Sumana, Leader of the World, declared of me;

"In an immeasurable aeon from now, he will become an Enlightened One.

19.

"Having strived in striving...etc... we will be present before him."

20.

Having heard his word too, I made my mind even more confident;

I determined on a further vow, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections.

21.

The city was named Mekhala, the noble was named Sudatta;

The birth mother was named Sirimā, of Sumana the Great Sage.

22.

For nine thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Canda, Sucanda, and Vaṭaṃsa were the three excellent palaces.

23.

Sixty-three hundred thousand women, adorned;

The woman was named Vaṭaṃsikā, the son was named Anūpama.

24.

Having seen the four signs, he departed on an elephant vehicle;

For no less than ten months, the Victor engaged in striving.

25.

Being requested by Brahmā, Sumana, leader of the world;

The Great Hero turned the wheel in the supreme city of Mekhala.

26.

Saraṇa and Bhāvitatta, were the chief disciples;

Udena was the attendant, of the great sage Sumana.

27.

Soṇā and Upasoṇā, were the chief female disciples;

That Enlightened One of immeasurable glory, became enlightened at the foot of a nāga tree.

28.

Varuṇa and Saraṇa, were the chief male supporters;

Cālā and Upacālā, were the chief female supporters.

29.

In height that Enlightened One, rose up ninety cubits;

Like a golden offering, he illuminated ten thousand worlds.

30.

Ninety thousand years, life span existed right then;

Remaining for that long, he led many people across.

31.

Having led across those to be led, and enlightened those to be enlightened;

The Enlightened One attained final Nibbāna, like the moon king setting.

32.

Those monks with taints destroyed, and that incomparable Enlightened One;

Having displayed incomparable light, those of great fame were quenched.

33.

That incomparable knowledge, and those incomparable jewels;

All that has disappeared, indeed, all formations are empty.

34.

The Enlightened One Sumana, bearer of fame, was quenched in Aṅgārāma;

Right there his victor's shrine, rose up four yojanas.

This is the chronicle of the Blessed One Sumana, fourth.

7.

The Chronicle of the Enlightened One Revata

1.

After Sumana, there was a leader named Revata;

Incomparable, unequalled, peerless, supreme victor.

2.

He too taught the Teaching, having been requested by Brahmā;

The analysis of aggregates and elements, non-occurrence in various existences.

3.

During his teaching of the Teaching there were three breakthroughs;

The first breakthrough was of an innumerable assembly.

4.

When the sage Revata trained King Arindama,

Then the second breakthrough was of a hundred thousand million.

5.

When the Bull among Men arose from seven days of seclusion,

He trained a hundred million humans and deities in the supreme fruition.

6.

There were three gatherings of the great sage Revata;

Of those with taints destroyed, stainless ones, well-liberated ones of such nature.

7.

Beyond the path of counting were those who first gathered;

The second assembly was of one hundred thousand crores.

8.

He who was unequalled in wisdom, a follower of his wheel,

He was then afflicted with illness, having reached uncertainty about life.

9.

Those sages who then came to inquire about his illness;

The third assembly was of a thousand crores of Arahants.

10.

I was at that time a brahmin named Atideva;

Having approached Buddha Revata, I went for refuge to him.

11.

His virtue, concentration, and unsurpassed quality of wisdom;

Having praised according to my strength, I gave my upper robe.

12.

That Buddha too, Revata, Leader of the World, declared of me;

"In an immeasurable aeon from now, he will become an Enlightened One.

13.

"Having strived in striving...etc... we will be present before him."

14.

Having heard his word too, I made my mind even more confident;

I determined on a further vow, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections.

15.

Then too, having remembered that Buddha-Teaching, I developed it;

I will bring forth that Teaching, which was wished for by me.

16.

The city was named Sudhaññavatī, the noble was named Vipula;

The birth mother was named Vipulā, of the Great Sage Revata.

17.

For six thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Sudassana, Ratanagghi and Āveḷa were adorned;

Three supreme palaces manifested through meritorious action.

18.

Thirty-three thousand women, adorned women;

The woman was named Sudassanā, the son was named Varuṇa.

19.

Having seen the four signs, he departed on a chariot vehicle;

For no less than seven months, the Victor engaged in striving.

20.

Being requested by Brahmā, Revata, leader of the world;

The Great Hero turned the wheel at Varuṇārāma in the glorious house.

21.

Varuṇa and Brahmadeva, were the chief disciples;

Sambhava by name was the attendant of the great sage Revata.

22.

Bhaddā and Subhaddā, were the chief female disciples;

That Enlightened One too, incomparable, awakened at the foot of a nāga tree.

23.

Paduma and Kuñjara, were the chief attendants;

Sirīmā and Yasavatī, were the chief female attendants.

24.

In height that Enlightened One, rose up eighty cubits;

It illuminates all directions, like the risen Indra's banner.

25.

Born from his body, an unsurpassed garland of light;

Whether by day or by night, pervades a yojana all around.

26.

Sixty thousand years, life span existed right then;

Remaining for that long, he led many people across.

27.

Having displayed the power of an Enlightened One, revealing the Deathless in the world;

Without clinging he was extinguished, like a fire with the extinction of fuel.

28.

That body was like a jewel, and that Teaching was incomparable;

All that has disappeared, indeed, all formations are empty.

29.

The Enlightened One Revata, bearer of glory, was extinguished in that great city;

His relics were distributed in various places.

The lineage of the Blessed One Revata, the fifth.

8.

The Chronicle of the Buddha Sobhita

1.

After Revata, there was a leader named Sobhita;

Concentrated, peaceful in mind, unequalled, unrivalled.

2.

That victor, in his own home, turned back his mind;

Having attained consummate enlightenment, he set in motion the Wheel of Teaching.

3.

From below Avīci up to the peak of existence;

In between was one assembly at the teaching.

4.

To that assembly the Enlightened One set in motion the Wheel of Teaching;

The first breakthrough was of an innumerable assembly.

5.

Then further as he taught, in the assembly of deities;

For ninety thousand crores, there was the second breakthrough.

6.

Again, there was a prince, a noble named Jayasena;

Having planted a monastery, he then offered it to the Enlightened One.

7.

While praising his offering, possessing vision, taught the Teaching;

Then the third breakthrough was of a hundred thousand million.

8.

There were three gatherings of the great sage Sobhita;

Of those with taints destroyed, the stainless ones, those of peaceful mind, such as they are.

9.

There was a king named Uggata, who gave a gift to the supreme among men;

At that gift-giving there gathered a hundred crores of Arahants.

10.

Again, the city group gave a gift to the supreme among men;

The second assembly was then of ninety crores.

11.

When the Victor, having dwelt in the deity world, descended,

The third assembly was then of eighty crores.

12.

I was at that time a brahmin named Sujāta;

Then I satisfied the Buddha together with his disciples with food and drink.

13.

That Buddha too, Sobhita, Leader of the World, declared of me;

"In an immeasurable aeon from now, he will become an Enlightened One.

14.

"Having strived in striving...etc... we will be present before him."

15.

Having heard his word too, delighted with stirred mind;

For the attainment of that very purpose, I made a firm determination.

16.

The city was named Sudhamma, the noble was named Sudhamma;

The birth mother of the Great Sage Sobhita was named Sudhammā.

17.

For nine thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Kumuda, Nāḷina, and Paduma were three excellent palaces.

18.

Thirty-seven thousand women, adorned,

The woman was named Maṇilā, his son was named Sīha.

19.

Having seen the four signs, he departed by palace;

Having practiced striving for seven days, the supreme person.

20.

Being requested by Brahmā, Sobhita, leader of the world;

The Great Hero turned the wheel in the supreme Dhamma garden.

21.

Asama and Sunetta, were the chief disciples;

Anoma by name was the attendant of the great sage Sobhita.

22.

Nakulā and Sujātā, were the chief female disciples;

And that Enlightened One, while awakening, awakened at the foot of a nāga tree.

23.

Ramma and Sudatta, were the chief male supporters;

Nakulā and Cittā, were the chief female supporters.

24.

Fifty-eight cubits tall was the great sage;

It illuminates all directions, like the risen hundred-rayed sun.

25.

Just as a blossoming forest, perfumed with various odours;

So too was his Teaching, perfumed with the odours of virtue.

26.

Just as the ocean, unsatiating to see;

So too was his Teaching, unsatiating to hear.

27.

Ninety thousand years, life span existed right then;

Remaining for that long, he led many people across.

28.

Having given exhortation and instruction to the remaining people;

Having warmed them like a fire, he was quenched with his disciples.

29.

That incomparable Enlightened One, and those disciples who had attained strength;

All that has disappeared, indeed, all formations are empty.

30.

The noble and Enlightened One Sobhita was quenched in the Lion Monastery;

His relics were distributed in various places.

This is the sixth chronicle of the Blessed One Sobhita.

9.

The Chronicle of the Buddha Anomadassī

1.

After Sobhita, there was an Enlightened One, supreme among bipeds;

Anomadassī of immeasurable fame, radiant and difficult to overcome.

2.

Having cut off all bondage, having destroyed the three kinds of existence;

He taught the path of no return to deities and humans.

3.

Like the ocean unshaken, like a mountain hard to approach;

Like space endless is he, like a blossomed king of sal trees.

4.

Even by seeing that Enlightened One, living beings are satisfied;

Having heard him speaking words, they attain the Deathless.

5.

His breakthrough to the Teaching was successful and prosperous then;

Hundreds of crores had the breakthrough in the first teaching.

6.

After that breakthrough, while the showers of Teaching were raining down;

Eighty crores had a breakthrough at the second teaching.

7.

After that, while it was raining, satisfying living beings;

For seventy-eight crores, there was a third breakthrough.

8.

There were three gatherings of that great sage too;

Of those who had attained the power of direct knowledge, who had blossomed in liberation.

9.

There was then a gathering of eight hundred thousand;

Of those who had abandoned vanity and delusion, of peaceful mind, such as they are.

10.

The second assembly was of seven hundred thousand;

Of those without blemish, without dust, peaceful ones of such nature.

11.

The third assembly was of six hundred thousand;

Of ascetics who had attained the power of direct knowledge and were quenched.

12.

At that time I was a spirit of great spiritual power;

Lord and master of many crores of spirits.

13.

Then too having approached that excellent Buddha, the great seer;

I satisfied with food and drink the Leader of the World with the Community.

14.

Then too that sage with purified vision declared about me;

"In an immeasurable aeon from now, he will become an Enlightened One.

15.

"Having strived in striving...etc... we will be present before him."

16.

Having heard his word too, delighted with stirred mind;

I determined on a further vow, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections.

17.

The city was named Candavatī, the noble was named Yasavā;

The mother was named Yasodharā, of the Teacher Anomadassī.

18.

For ten thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Sirī, Upasirī, Vaḍḍha, were the three excellent palaces.

19.

Twenty-three thousand women, adorned,

The woman was named Sirimā, his son was named Upavāṇa.

20.

Having seen the four signs, he departed by palanquin;

For no less than ten months, the Victor engaged in striving.

21.

Being requested by Brahmā, Anomadassī the great sage;

The Great Hero turned the wheel in the delightful garden.

22.

Nisabha and Anoma, were the chief disciples;

Varuṇa by name was the attendant, of the Teacher Anomadassī.

23.

Sundarī and Sumanā, were the chief female disciples;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One, is declared to be the Ajjuna.

24.

Nandivaḍḍha and Sirivaḍḍha, were the chief male supporters;

Uppalā and Padumā, were the chief female supporters.

25.

Fifty-eight cubits tall was the great sage;

Its radiance streamed forth, like the risen hundred-rayed one.

26.

A hundred thousand years, life span existed right then;

Remaining for that long, he led many people across.

27.

The Teaching was in full flower with such Arahants;

Adorned with those free from lust and stainless, the Victor's Teaching shone forth.

28.

That Teacher of immeasurable fame, those incomparable pairs;

All that has disappeared, indeed, all formations are empty.

29.

The Victor, Teacher Anomadassī became quenched in the garden of the Teaching;

Right there was the conqueror's shrine, twenty-five cubits in height.

The seventh chapter on the lineage of the Blessed One Anomadassī.

10.

The Chronicle of the Buddha Paduma

1.

After Anomadassī, there was an Enlightened One, supreme among bipeds;

By name he was called Paduma, unequalled, without rival.

2.

His virtue too was unequalled, his concentration limitless;

His excellent knowledge immeasurable, and his liberation incomparable.

3.

When that one of incomparable power set in motion the wheel of the Teaching;

There were three breakthroughs, dispelling great darkness.

4.

In the first breakthrough, the Enlightened One enlightened a hundred crores;

In the second breakthrough, the wise one enlightened ninety crores.

5.

When the Enlightened One Paduma exhorted his own son,

Then for eighty crores there was the third breakthrough.

6.

There were three gatherings of the great sage Paduma;

The first assembly was of a hundred thousand crores.

7.

At the time of spreading the kathina, when the kathina robe had arisen,

For the General of the Teaching, the monks sewed a robe.

8.

Then those stainless monks, with six direct knowledges and great spiritual power;

Three hundred thousand, assembled undefeated.

9.

Once again that bull among men, went to dwell in the wilds;

Then there was a gathering, of two hundred thousand.

10.

I was at that time, a lion, lord of beasts;

Pursuing seclusion, I saw the Victor in the wilds.

11.

Having paid homage with my head at his feet, having circumambulated him;

Having roared out three times, I attended on the Victor for seven days.

12.

Having emerged from the excellent meditative attainment after seven days, the Truth Finder;

Having reflected with his mind, assembled a crore of monks.

13.

Then too that great hero declared in their midst;

"In an immeasurable aeon from now, he will become an Enlightened One.

14.

"Having strived in striving...etc... we will be present before him."

15.

Having heard his word too, I made my mind even more confident;

I determined on a further vow, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections.

16.

There was a city named Campaka, a noble named Asama;

The birth mother of the Great Sage Paduma was named Asamā.

17.

For ten thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Nanda, Vasu and Yasa were the three supreme mansions.

18.

Thirty-three thousand women, adorned women;

The woman was named Uttarā, his son was named Ramma.

19.

Having seen the four signs, he departed on a chariot vehicle;

For no less than eight months, the Victor engaged in striving.

20.

Being requested by Brahmā, Paduma, leader of the world;

The Great Hero turned the wheel in the supreme Dhañcu garden.

21.

Sāla and Upasāla, were the chief disciples;

Varuṇa by name was the attendant, of the great sage Paduma.

22.

Rādhā and Surādhā, were the chief female disciples;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One, is declared to be the Mahāsoṇa.

23.

Bhiyya and Asama, were the chief male supporters;

Rucī and Nandarāmā, were the chief female supporters.

24.

Fifty-eight cubits tall was the great sage;

His radiance streamed forth, incomparable in all directions.

25.

The luminosity of the moon, the luminosity of the sun, the luminosity of jewels, fire and gems;

All these are destroyed, having reached the supreme radiance of the Victor.

26.

A hundred thousand years, life span existed right then;

Remaining for that long, he led many people across.

27.

Having enlightened completely those beings whose minds were fully mature,

Having instructed the remainder, he was quenched with his disciples.

28.

Like a snake its worn out skin, like a tree its withered leaves,

Having abandoned all formations, he was quenched like a flame.

29.

Paduma, the excellent Victor, the Teacher, became quenched in the garden of the Teaching;

His relics were distributed in various places.

This is the eighth chapter about the Blessed One Paduma.

11.

The Chronicle of the Enlightened One Nārada

1.

After Paduma, there was an Enlightened One, supreme among bipeds;

Named Nārada by name, unequalled, without rival.

2.

That Enlightened One, the eldest beloved son of a wheel-turning monarch;

Wearing garlands and ornaments, approached the park.

3.

There was a tree there, abundant in glory, handsome, tall, and pure;

Having reached that place, he sat down, beneath the great Soṇa tree.

4.

There arose supreme knowledge there, infinite and diamond-like;

With that he investigated formations, turning upright what was overturned.

5.

There he carried away all defilements, without remainder;

He attained consummate enlightenment, and the fourteen kinds of Buddha-knowledge.

6.

Having attained enlightenment, he set in motion the Wheel of Teaching;

For a hundred thousand crores, there was the first breakthrough.

7.

The great sage, disciplining the great dragon king Mahādoṇa;

Then performed a marvel, showing it to those with deities.

8.

Then at that Teaching-proclamation, of deities and human beings,

Ninety thousand crores crossed over all doubt.

9.

At the time when the great hero exhorted his own son,

For eighty thousand crores, there was the third breakthrough.

10.

There were three gatherings of the great sage Nārada;

The first assembly was of a hundred thousand crores.

11.

When the Enlightened One revealed the qualities of enlightenment, with their source;

Then ninety thousand crores of stainless ones gathered.

12.

When the dragon Verocana gave a gift to the Teacher;

Then eighty hundred thousand sons of the Victor gathered.

13.

At that time I was a matted-hair ascetic of intense austerity;

I moved through the sky, having mastered the five direct knowledges.

14.

Then I satisfied with food and drink, the incomparable one with the Community and attendants;

And honoured them with sandalwood.

15.

Then too Nārada, the Leader of the World, declared about me;

"In an immeasurable aeon from now, he will become an Enlightened One.

16.

"Having strived in striving...etc... we will be present before him."

17.

Having heard his word too, making my mind even more delighted;

I undertook a severe vow, for fulfilling the ten perfections.

18.

The city was named Dhaññavatī, the noble was named Sudeva;

The birth mother of the Great Sage Nārada was named Anomā.

19.

For nine thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Jita, Vijitābhirāma, these were the three excellent palaces.

20.

Forty-three thousand women, adorned women;

The woman was named Vijitasenā, the son was named Nanduttara.

21.

Having seen the four signs, he departed on foot;

For seven days the supreme person practised striving.

22.

Being requested by Brahmā, Nārada, leader of the world;

The Great Hero turned the wheel in the supreme Dhañcu garden.

23.

Bhaddasāla and Jitamitta, were the chief disciples;

Vāseṭṭha was the chief attendant of the sage Nārada.

24.

Uttarā and Phagguni, were the chief female disciples;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One, is declared to be the Mahāsoṇa.

25.

Uggarinda and Vasabha, were the chief male supporters;

Indāvarī and Vaṇḍī, were the chief female supporters.

26.

Eighty-eight cubits tall, risen up was the great sage;

Like a golden offering, he illuminated ten thousand worlds.

27.

The light of his body's fathom-wide aura streams in all directions;

Continuously day and night, it always pervades a yojana.

28.

At that time, no people within a yojana all around

Lit torches or lamps, covered as they were by the Buddha's rays.

29.

Ninety thousand years, life span existed right then;

Remaining for that long, he led many people across.

30.

As the sky is beautifully adorned with stars,

Just so his Dispensation shines with the Arahants.

31.

For crossing the stream of saṃsāra, for those remaining who were practising,

Having made a firm bridge of Teaching, that bull among men was quenched.

32.

That incomparable Enlightened One too, and those with taints destroyed of immeasurable heat;

All that has disappeared, indeed, all formations are empty.

33.

Nārada, the bull among conquerors, was quenched in the city of Sudassana;

Right there his excellent shrine rose up four yojanas.

The chronicle of the Blessed One Nārada, the ninth.

12.

The Chronicle of the Enlightened One Padumuttara

1.

After Nārada, there was an Enlightened One, supreme among bipeds;

The Victor named Padumuttara, unshakeable like the ocean.

2.

That aeon was like cream, in which the Enlightened One was born;

People abundant in wholesome qualities were born in that aeon.

3.

At the first teaching of the Blessed One Padumuttara,

For a hundred thousand crores there was the breakthrough of the Teaching.

4.

After that too, while it was raining, satisfying living beings;

For thirty-seven hundred thousand, there was the second breakthrough.

5.

At the time when the great hero approached Ānanda;

Having gone to his father's presence, he struck the drum of the Deathless.

6.

When the drum of the Deathless was struck, while it was raining with a shower of Teaching;

For fifty hundred thousand, there was the third breakthrough.

7.

An exhorter and instructor, leading all living beings across;

The Buddha, skilled in teaching, led many people across.

8.

There were three gatherings of the Teacher Padumuttara;

The first assembly was of a hundred thousand crores.

9.

When the incomparable Enlightened One dwelt on Mount Vebhāra;

There was a second assembly of ninety thousand crores.

10.

Again when he went wandering from villages, towns and countries;

The third assembly was of eighty thousand crores.

11.

At that time, I was a matted-hair ascetic of the kingdom named Jaṭila;

To the Community headed by the Enlightened One, I gave cloth with food.

12.

That Buddha too declared of me, seated in the midst of the Community;

"A hundred thousand aeons from now, he will become an Enlightened One.

13.

"Having strived in striving...etc... we will be present before him."

14.

Having heard his word too, I undertook a higher vow;

I made a firm and strong resolve, to fulfill the ten perfections.

15.

All sectarians were confounded, dejected and depressed then;

None attended to them at all, they were banished from the country.

16.

All having gathered there together, approached the Buddha's presence;

You are the protector, Great Hero, be a refuge, One with Vision.

17.

The compassionate one with tender concern, seeking the welfare of all living beings;

Having met all sectarians, he established them in the five precepts.

18.

Thus it was free from confusion, and void of sectarians;

Adorned with Arahants, with those who had mastery, such as these.

19.

The city was named Haṃsavatī, the noble was named Ānanda;

The mother named Sujātā, of the Teacher Padumuttara.

20.

For ten thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Naravāhana of great fame and power, three supreme palaces.

21.

Forty-three thousand women, adorned women;

The woman was named Vasudattā, his son was named Uttama.

22.

Having seen the four signs, he departed by palace;

For seven days the supreme person practised striving.

23.

Being requested by Brahmā, Padumuttara the guide;

The Great Hero turned the wheel in the supreme garden of Mithila.

24.

Devala and Sujāta, were the chief disciples;

Sumana by name was the attendant, of Padumuttara, the great sage.

25.

Amitā and Asamā, were the chief female disciples;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One, is declared to be the Salala.

26.

Vitiṇṇa and Tissa, were the chief male supporters;

Haṭṭhā and Vicittā, were the chief female supporters.

27.

Fifty-eight cubits tall was the great sage;

Like a golden offering, possessing the thirty-two excellent characteristics.

28.

Walls, doors, and partitions, trees and mountain peaks;

Were no obstruction to him for twelve yojanas all around.

29.

A hundred thousand years, life span existed right then;

Remaining for that long, he led many people across.

30.

Having helped the multitude cross over, having cut off all doubt,

Having blazed like a mass of fire, he was quenched with his disciples.

31.

The Victor, the Enlightened One Padumuttara was quenched in the Nanda Park;

Right there his excellent stupa was twelve yojanas high.

The chronicle of the Blessed One Padumuttara, the tenth.

13.

The Chronicle of the Enlightened One Sumedha

1.

After Padumuttara, there was a leader named Sumedha;

Hard to approach, of rising heat, the sage supreme in all the world.

2.

Clear-eyed, with a beautiful face, tall, upright and radiant;

Seeking the welfare of all beings, he freed many from bondage.

3.

When the Enlightened One attained consummate supreme enlightenment;

In the city of Sudassana, he set in motion the Wheel of Teaching.

4.

During his teaching of the Teaching there were three breakthroughs;

For a hundred thousand crores, there was the first breakthrough.

5.

Again afterwards that victor tamed the yakkha Kumbhakaṇṇa;

For ninety thousand crores, there was the second breakthrough.

6.

Again afterwards, he of immeasurable fame proclaimed the four truths;

For eighty thousand crores, there was the third breakthrough.

7.

There were three gatherings of the great sage Sumedha;

Of those with taints destroyed, the stainless ones, those of peaceful mind, such as they are.

8.

When the Victor approached the city named Sudassana;

Then there were one hundred crores of monks with taints destroyed.

9.

Again at Devakūṭa, when the kathina was spread for the monks;

The second assembly was then of ninety crores.

10.

Again when the One of Ten Powers went on his journey;

The third assembly was then of eighty crores.

11.

I was at that time a young man named Uttara;

Eighty crores of wealth was accumulated in my house.

12.

Having given everything completely to the leader of the world with his Community;

I went for refuge to him and delighted in the going forth.

13.

That Buddha too declared of me, making his rejoicing;

"Thirty thousand aeons from now, he will become an Enlightened One.

14.

"Having strived in striving...etc... we will be present before him."

15.

Having heard his word too, I made my mind even more confident;

I determined on a further vow, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections.

16.

The discourses and the discipline too, the Teacher's nine-factored Dispensation;

Having mastered all, I illuminated the Victor's Teaching.

17.

Dwelling there diligently, in sitting, standing and walking;

Having gone to perfection in direct knowledge, I went to the brahmā world.

18.

The city was named Sudassana, the noble was named Sudatta;

Sudattā was the name of the mother of the great sage Sumedha.

19.

For nine thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Sucanda, Kañcana and Sirivaḍḍha were the three excellent palaces.

20.

Forty-eight thousand women, adorned women;

The woman was named Sumanā, his son was named Punabbasu.

21.

Having seen the four signs, he departed on an elephant vehicle;

For no less than half a month, the Victor engaged in striving.

22.

Being requested by Brahmā, Sumedha, leader of the world;

The Great Hero turned the wheel in the supreme Sudassana garden.

23.

Saraṇa and Sabbakāma, were the chief disciples;

Sāgara by name was the attendant of the great sage Sumedha.

24.

Rāmā and Surāmā, were the chief female disciples;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One, is declared to be the Mahānīpa.

25.

Uruvela and Yasavā, were the chief male supporters;

Yasodhara and Sirimā, were the chief female supporters.

26.

Eighty-eight cubits tall, risen up was the great sage;

He illuminates all directions, like the moon among the group of stars.

27.

Just as the wheel-turning monarch's jewel shines for a yojana;

So too his jewel pervades for a yojana all around.

28.

Ninety thousand years, life span existed right then;

Remaining for that long, he led many people across.

29.

With those of the three true knowledges and six direct knowledges, who had attained strength, such as these;

This was crowded with good Arahants.

30.

All those of immeasurable fame too, liberated without acquisition;

Having shown the light of knowledge, those of great fame were quenched.

31.

The Enlightened One Sumedha, the supreme victor, was quenched in the Medhārāma;

His relics were distributed in various places.

The chronicle of the Blessed One Sumedha is the eleventh.

14.

The Chronicle of the Enlightened One Sujāta

1.

In that same auspicious aeon, a leader named Sujāta;

With shoulders like a lion and bull, immeasurable, hard to approach.

2.

Like the stainless pure moon, glorious like the hundred-rayed sun;

Thus shines the Enlightened One, ever blazing with glory.

3.

Having attained consummate supreme enlightenment, the Enlightened One;

In the city of Sumaṅgala, set in motion the Wheel of Teaching.

4.

When Sujāta, the leader of the world, was teaching the excellent Teaching;

Eighty crores had the breakthrough in the first teaching.

When Sujāta of immeasurable fame approached the deities for rain;

For thirty-seven hundred thousand, there was the second breakthrough.

6.

When Sujāta, the unequalled one, approached his father;

For six million, there was the third breakthrough.

7.

There were three gatherings of the great sage Sujāta;

Of those with taints destroyed, the stainless ones, those of peaceful mind, such as they are.

8.

Of those who had attained the power of direct knowledge, and those who had not attained in various existences;

Sixty hundred thousand first assembled.

9.

Again at another assembly, when the Victor descended from the realm of the Thirty-Three;

The second assembly was of fifty hundred thousand.

10.

Approaching the Bull of Men, his chief disciple;

With four hundred thousand, approached the Enlightened One.

11.

I was at that time, the ruler of the four continents;

I was one who moved through the sky, a wheel-turning monarch of great strength.

12.

Having seen a wonder in the world, marvellous and terrifying;

Having approached, he paid homage to Sujāta, leader of the world.

13.

The great monarchy over the four continents, the seven supreme treasures;

Having dedicated them to the Enlightened One, I went forth in his presence.

14.

The park keepers in the country, having collected their earnings;

Bring to the Community of monks requisites and dwelling places.

15.

That Buddha too, the lord of ten thousand worlds, declared of me;

"Thirty thousand aeons from now, he will become an Enlightened One.

16.

"Having strived in striving...etc... we will be present before him."

17.

Having heard his word too, I generated even more joy;

I undertook a severe vow, for fulfilling the ten perfections.

18.

The discourses and the discipline too, the Teacher's nine-factored Dispensation;

Having mastered all, I illuminated the Victor's Teaching.

19.

Dwelling there diligently, having developed the divine development;

Having gone to the perfection of direct knowledge, I went to the brahmā world.

20.

There was a city named Sumaṅgala, and a noble named Uggata;

Pabhāvatī was the name of the mother of the Great Sage Sujāta.

21.

For nine thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Sirī, Upasirī, and Nanda were the three excellent palaces.

22.

Twenty-three thousand women, adorned,

The woman was named Sirinandā, his son was named Upasena.

23.

Having seen the four signs, he departed on a horse vehicle;

For no less than nine months, the Victor engaged in striving.

24.

Being requested by Brahmā, Sujāta, leader of the world;

The Great Hero turned the wheel in the supreme Sumaṅgala garden.

25.

Sudassana and Sudeva, were the chief disciples;

Nārada was the attendant of the great sage Sujāta.

26.

Nāgā and Nāgasamālā, were the chief female disciples;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One, is declared to be the Mahāveḷu.

27.

And that tree had a solid trunk, was without holes and had attainment;

The stem was straight and tall, beautiful and delightful.

28.

Having grown into one mass, then the branches spread out;

Like a well-bound peacock fan, thus that tree was beautiful.

29.

It had no thorns, nor did it have any great holes;

With widespread branches close together, it had continuous shade and was delightful.

30.

Sudatta and Citta, were the chief male supporters;

Subhaddā and Padumā, were the chief female supporters.

31.

Fifty ratanas tall was that Victor;

Perfect in all aspects, endowed with all qualities.

32.

His incomparable radiance streamed forth all around;

Immeasurable, matchless, incomparable in similes.

33.

Ninety thousand years, life span existed right then;

Remaining for that long, he led many people across.

34.

Like waves in the ocean, like stars in the sky;

So then was his Teaching honoured by the Arahants.

35.

And that incomparable Enlightened One, and those qualities that were unequalled;

All that has disappeared, indeed, all formations are empty.

36.

The well-born supreme victor, the Enlightened One, was quenched in a stone monastery;

Right there his shrine stands, three leagues high.

The twelfth chapter about the Blessed One Sujāta.

15.

The Chronicle of the Enlightened One Piyadassī

1.

After Sujāta, the self-enlightened leader of the world;

Hard to approach, incomparable, Piyadassī of great fame.

2.

That Enlightened One of immeasurable glory shines like the sun;

Having destroyed all darkness, he set in motion the Wheel of Teaching.

3.

For him too of incomparable heat, there were three breakthroughs;

For a hundred thousand crores, there was the first breakthrough.

4.

Sudassana, king of deities, delighted in wrong view;

Dispelling his view, the Teacher taught the Teaching.

5.

Then there was an incomparable gathering of people, a great assembly;

For ninety thousand crores, there was the second breakthrough.

6.

When the Charioteer of Men trained the elephant Doṇamukha;

For eighty thousand crores, there was the third breakthrough.

7.

There were three gatherings of that Piyadassī too;

The first assembly was of a hundred thousand crores.

8.

After that, ninety crores of sages assembled together;

In the third gathering, there were eighty crores.

9.

I was at that time a brahmin named Kassapa;

"A reciter, a master of the mantras, accomplished in the three Vedas;

10.

Having heard his Teaching, I generated confidence;

With a hundred thousand crores, I had a monastic monastery built.

11.

Having given him the monastery, delighted with stirred mind;

I firmly undertook the refuges and the five precepts.

12.

That Buddha too declared of me, seated in the midst of the Community;

"In eighteen hundred aeons, he will become an Enlightened One.

13.

"Having strived in striving...etc... we will be present before him."

14.

Having heard his word too, I made my mind even more confident;

I determined on a further vow, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections.

15.

The city was named Sudhañña, the noble was named Sudatta;

The mother was named Candā, of the Teacher Piyadassī.

16.

For nine thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Sunimmalavimalagiruguhā were the names of three excellent palaces.

17.

And thirty-three thousand women, adorned women;

The woman was named Vimalā, and the son was named Kañcanāveḷa.

18.

Having seen the four signs, he departed on a chariot vehicle;

For six months the supreme person practised striving.

19.

Being requested by Brahmā, Piyadassī the great sage;

The Great Hero turned the wheel in the delightful Usabha garden.

20.

Pālita and Sabbadassī, were the chief disciples;

Sobhita by name was the attendant, of the Teacher Piyadassī.

21.

Sujātā and Dhammadinnā, were the chief female disciples;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One, is declared to be the Kakudha.

22.

Sandhaka and Dhammaka, were the chief male supporters;

Visākhā and Dhammadinnā, were the chief female supporters.

23.

That Enlightened One of immeasurable glory, possessing the thirty-two excellent characteristics;

Eighty cubits in height, appears like a king of sal trees.

24.

Fire, moon and sun, do not have such radiance;

Such was the radiance of that incomparable great sage.

25.

That deity above deities also had such a life span;

Ninety thousand years the one with vision remained in the world.

26.

That incomparable Enlightened One too, and those incomparable pairs;

All that has disappeared, indeed, all formations are empty.

27.

Piyadassī, the supreme sage, was quenched in the Assattha monastery;

Right there his victor's shrine rose up three yojanas.

The chronicle of the Blessed One Piyadassī, the thirteenth.

16.

The Chronicle of the Buddha Atthadassī

1.

In that same auspicious aeon, Atthadassī of great fame;

Having dispelled the great darkness, he attained supreme enlightenment.

2.

Being requested by Brahmā, he set in motion the Wheel of Teaching;

He satisfied with the Deathless the world with its ten thousand deities.

3.

For that protector of the world too, there were three breakthroughs;

For a hundred thousand crores, there was the first breakthrough.

4.

When the Enlightened One Atthadassī, wandered in the realm of deities;

For a hundred thousand crores, there was the second breakthrough.

5.

And again when the Enlightened One, taught in the presence of his father;

For a hundred thousand crores, there was the third breakthrough.

6.

There were three gatherings of that great sage too;

Of those with taints destroyed, the stainless ones, those of peaceful mind, such as they are.

7.

The first assembly was of ninety-eight thousand;

The second assembly was of eighty-eight thousand.

8.

The third assembly was of seventy-eight hundred thousand;

Of those liberated through non-clinging, the stainless great seekers.

9.

At that time I was a matted-hair ascetic of intense austerity;

Named Susīma by name, considered the best in greatness.

10.

Divine mandārava flowers, lotuses, and pārichattaka flowers;

Having brought them from the world of deities, I offered them to the Enlightened One.

11.

That Buddha too, Atthadassī, the great sage, declared of me;

"In eighteen hundred aeons, he will become an Enlightened One.

12.

"Having strived in striving...etc... we will be present before him."

13.

Having heard his word too, delighted with stirred mind;

I determined on a further vow, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections.

14.

A city named Sobhana, a noble named Sāgara;

The mother named Sudassanā, of the Teacher Atthadassī.

15.

For ten thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Amaragiri, Sugiri, and Vāhana were the three excellent palaces.

16.

Thirty-three thousand women, adorned women;

The woman was named Visākhā, and the son was named Sela.

17.

Having seen the four signs, he departed on a horse vehicle;

For no less than eight months, the Victor engaged in striving.

18.

Being requested by Brahmā, Atthadassī of great fame;

The Great Hero turned the wheel in the Anoma garden, bull among men.

19.

Santa and Upasanta, were the chief disciples;

Abhaya by name was the attendant, of the Teacher Atthadassī.

20.

Dhammā and Sudhammā, were the chief female disciples;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One, is declared to be the Campaka.

21.

Nakula and Nisabha, were the chief male supporters;

Makilā and Sunandā, were the chief female supporters.

22.

That incomparable Enlightened One too, rose up to eighty cubits;

He shone like a king of sal trees, like the full moon king.

23.

His natural radiance, of many hundred millions,

Above, below, in the ten directions, constantly pervaded a yojana.

24.

That Enlightened One too, bull among men, the sage supreme among all beings,

A hundred thousand years remained in the world with vision.

25.

Having displayed incomparable light, having illuminated the world with its deities,

He too reached impermanence, like a fire's extinction through lack of fuel.

26.

Atthadassī, the Victor, was quenched in the Anoma monastery;

His relics were distributed in various places.

The fourteenth chapter is about the lineage of the Blessed One Atthadassī.

17.

The Chronicle of the Enlightened One Dhammadassī

1.

Right there in the Maṇḍa aeon, Dhammadassī of great fame;

Having dispelled the darkness, shone forth in the world with its deities.

2.

When that one of incomparable power set in motion the wheel of the Teaching;

For a hundred thousand crores, there was the first breakthrough.

3.

When the Enlightened One Dhammadassī, trained the sage Sañjaya;

Then for ninety crores, there was the second breakthrough.

4.

When Sakka approached the Leader with his assembly;

Then for eighty crores there was the third breakthrough.

5.

That deity of deities also had three assemblies;

Of those with taints destroyed, the stainless ones, those of peaceful mind, such as they are.

6.

When the Enlightened One Dhammadassī went for the rains retreat to the refuge;

Then the first assembly was of a hundred thousand crores.

7.

And again when the Enlightened One came from the deities to the human realm;

The second assembly was then of a hundred crores.

8.

And again when the Enlightened One explained the qualities of ascetic practices;

The third assembly was then of eighty crores.

9.

I was at that time Sakka, the first of givers;

With divine garlands and fragrance, I worshipped with musical instruments.

10.

That Buddha too declared of me, seated in the midst of deities;

"In eighteen hundred aeons, he will become an Enlightened One.

11.

"Having strived in striving...etc... we will be present before him."

12.

Having heard his word too, I made my mind even more confident;

I determined on a further vow, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections.

13.

There was a city named Saraṇa, a noble named Saraṇa;

The mother named Sunandā, of the Teacher Dhammadassī.

14.

For eight thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Dustless, stainless, beautiful to see, were the three supreme palaces.

15.

Forty-three thousand women, adorned women;

The woman was named Vicikoḷi, his son was Puññavaḍḍhana.

16.

Having seen the four signs, he departed by palace;

For seven days the supreme person practised striving.

17.

Being requested by Brahmā, Dhammadassī, bull among men;

The Great Hero turned the wheel in the Deer Park, supreme among men.

18.

Paduma and Phussadeva, were the chief disciples;

Sunetta by name was the attendant, of the Teacher Dhammadassī.

19.

Khemā and Saccanāmā, were the chief female disciples;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One, is declared to be the Bimbijāla.

20.

Subhadda and Kaṭissaha, were the chief male supporters;

Sāḷiyā and Kaḷiyā, were the chief female supporters.

21.

That incomparable Enlightened One too, rose up to eighty cubits;

He outshines with radiance the ten thousand realms.

22.

Like a fully blossomed king of sāla trees, like lightning in the sky;

Like the sun at midday, thus he shone.

23.

His life too, of incomparable radiance, was righteous;

A hundred thousand years remained in the world with vision.

24.

Having shown the light, having made the Dispensation stainless,

He passed away like the moon in the sky, quenched with his disciples.

25.

Dhammadassi the great hero was quenched in the Sala Grove;

Right there his excellent stupa rose up three yojanas.

The chronicle of the Blessed One Dhammadassi is the fifteenth.

18.

The Chronicle of the Enlightened One Siddhattha

1.

After Dhammadassi, there was a leader named Siddhattha;

Having destroyed all darkness, like the sun risen up.

2.

He too, having attained enlightenment, helping to cross over the world with its deities;

Rained down with the cloud of Teaching, extinguishing the world with its deities.

3.

For him too of incomparable heat, there were three breakthroughs;

For a hundred thousand crores, there was the first breakthrough.

4.

Again later in Bhīmaratha, when he beat the drum;

Then for ninety crores, there was the second breakthrough.

5.

When the Enlightened One taught the Teaching in Vebhāra, that excellent city;

Then for ninety crores, there was the third breakthrough.

6.

There were three gatherings of that supreme one among bipeds too;

Of those with taints destroyed, the stainless ones, those of peaceful mind, such as they are.

7.

Of nine hundred billion, and eighty billion;

These were the three states, in the assembly of the stainless ones.

8.

I was at that time an ascetic named Maṅgala;

With rising heat, hard to overcome, concentrated with the power of direct knowledge.

9.

Having brought a fruit from a rose apple tree, I gave it to Siddhattha;

Having accepted it, the Enlightened One spoke these words.

10.

"Look at this ascetic, with matted hair, of intense austerity;

Ninety-four aeons from now, he will become an Enlightened One.

11.

"Having strived in striving...etc... we will be present before him."

12.

Having heard his word too, I made my mind even more confident;

I determined on a further vow, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections.

13.

A city named Vebhara, a noble named Udena;

A mother named Suphassa, of the great sage Siddhattha.

14.

For ten thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Kokā, Suppala, and Kokanadā were the three supreme palaces.

15.

Forty-eight thousand women, adorned women;

The woman was named Somanassā, his son was named Anupama.

16.

Having seen the four signs, he departed by palanquin;

For no less than ten months, the Victor engaged in striving.

17.

Being requested by Brahmā, Siddhattha, leader of the world;

The Great Hero turned the wheel in the Deer Park, supreme among men.

18.

Sambala and Sumitta, were the chief disciples;

Revata was the attendant, of the great sage Siddhattha.

19.

Sīvalā and Surāmā, were the chief female disciples;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One, is declared to be the Kaṇikāra.

20.

Suppiya and Samudda, were the chief male supporters;

Rammā and Surammā, were the chief female supporters.

21.

That Buddha was sixty ratanas tall, reaching up to the sky;

Like a golden offering, he illuminated ten thousand worlds.

22.

That incomparable Enlightened One too, peerless, unrivalled;

A hundred thousand years remained in the world with vision.

23.

Having displayed abundant radiance, having caused the disciples to flower;

Having delighted in attainments, he was quenched with his disciples.

24.

Siddhattha, supreme sage, Enlightened One, was quenched in Anomārāma;

Right there his excellent shrine rose up four yojanas.

The lineage of the Blessed One Siddhatta is the sixteenth.

19.

The Chronicle of the Buddha Tissa

1.

After Siddhatta, unequalled, unrivalled;

Of endless heat, of boundless fame, Tissa the Leader Supreme of the World.

2.

Having dispelled the darkness, having illuminated the world with its deities;

The great hero, compassionate, arose in the world with vision.

3.

His spiritual power too was incomparable, and incomparable his virtue and concentration;

Having gone to perfection in everything, he set in motion the wheel of the Teaching.

4.

That Enlightened One made known his pure utterance in the ten-thousandfold world-system;

Hundreds of crores had the breakthrough in the first teaching.

5.

The second was for ninety crores, the third for sixty crores;

He then freed beings, both human and divine, from bondage.

6.

There were three gatherings of Tissa, the foremost leader of the world;

Of those with taints destroyed, the stainless ones, those of peaceful mind, such as they are.

7.

The first assembly was of a hundred thousand with taints destroyed;

The second assembly was of ninety hundred thousand.

8.

The third assembly was of eighty hundred thousand;

Of those with taints destroyed, the stainless ones, blossomed in liberation.

9.

I was at that time a noble named Sujāta;

Having abandoned great wealth, I went forth into the ascetic life.

10.

When I had gone forth, the Leader of the World arose;

Having heard the sound "Enlightened One", rapture arose in me.

11.

Divine mandārava flowers, lotuses, and pārichattaka flowers;

Raising with both hands, shaking them I approached.

12.

Surrounded by the four castes, Tissa, the foremost Leader of the world;

Having taken those flowers, I held them over the Victor's head.

13.

That Buddha too declared of me, seated in the midst of the people;

"Ninety-two aeons from now, he will become an Enlightened One.

14.

"Having strived in striving...etc... we will be present before him."

15.

Having heard his word too, I made my mind even more confident;

I determined on a further vow, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections.

16.

There was a city named Khemaka, a noble named Janasandha;

The mother of the Great Sage Tissa was named Padumā.

17.

For seven thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Guhāsela, Nārisaya, and Nisabhā were three excellent palaces.

18.

Thirty thousand women, adorned;

The woman was named Subhaddā, the son was named Ānanda.

19.

Having seen the four signs, he departed on a horse vehicle;

For no less than eight months, the Victor engaged in striving.

20.

Being requested by Brahmā, Tissa, leader supreme of the world;

The Great Hero turned the wheel in the supreme Yasavatiya.

21.

Brahmadeva and Udaya, were the chief disciples;

The attendant of the Great Sage Tissa was named Samaṅga.

22.

Phussā and Sudattā, were the chief female disciples;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One, is declared to be the Asana.

23.

Sambala and Sirimā, were the chief male supporters;

Kisāgotamī and Upasenā, were the chief female supporters.

24.

That Enlightened One was sixty ratanas tall, the Victor in height;

Incomparable, unequalled, he appeared like the Himalayas.

25.

His life span too, of incomparable power, was unsurpassed;

A hundred thousand years remained in the world with vision.

26.

Having experienced the highest, excellent, supreme glory,

Having blazed like a mass of fire, he was quenched with his disciples.

27.

Like a cloud by the wind, like a festival by the sun;

Like darkness by a lamp, he was quenched with his disciples.

28.

The supreme victor, the Enlightened One Tissa was quenched in the Nanda Park;

Right there his victor's shrine rose up three yojanas.

The chronicle of the Blessed One Tissa is the seventeenth.

20.

The Chronicle of the Enlightened One Phussa

1.

In that same auspicious aeon, there was an unsurpassed Teacher;

Incomparable, unequalled, Phussa, leader of the world.

2.

Having destroyed all darkness, having untangled the great tangle;

Satisfying the world with its deities, he rained down with the water of the Deathless.

3.

When setting in motion the wheel of Teaching, at the auspicious constellation Pussa;

For a hundred thousand crores, there was the first breakthrough.

4.

For ninety hundred thousand, there was the second breakthrough;

For eighty hundred thousand, there was the third breakthrough.

5.

There were three gatherings of the great sage Phussa too;

Of those with taints destroyed, the stainless ones, those of peaceful mind, such as they are.

6.

The first assembly was of sixty hundred thousand;

The second assembly was of fifty hundred thousand.

7.

The third assembly was of forty hundred thousand;

Of those liberated through non-clinging, with rebirth-linking cut off.

8.

I was at that time, a noble named Vijitāvī;

Having given up the great monarchy, I went forth in his presence.

9.

That Buddha too, Phussa, Leader Supreme of the World, declared of me;

"Ninety-two aeons from now, he will become an Enlightened One.

10.

"Having strived in striving...etc... we will be present before him."

11.

Having heard his word too, I made my mind even more confident;

I determined on a further vow, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections.

12.

Having seen the four signs, he departed on an elephant vehicle;

For six months the supreme person practised striving.

18.

Being requested by Brahmā, Phussa, leader supreme of the world;

The Great Hero turned the wheel in the Deer Park, supreme among men.

19.

Surakkhita and Dhammasena, were the chief disciples;

Sabhiya was the chief supporter, of Phussa the great sage.

20.

Cālā and Upacālā, were the chief female disciples;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One, is declared to be the Āmaṇḍa.

21.

Dhanañcaya and Visākha, were the chief male supporters;

Padumā and Nāgā, were the chief female supporters.

22.

Fifty-eight cubits high, that sage rose up;

He shone like the hundred-rayed one, like the full moon king.

23.

Ninety thousand years, life span existed right then;

Remaining for that long, he led many people across.

24.

Having exhorted many beings, having led many people across;

That Teacher of incomparable fame was quenched with his disciples.

25.

Phussa, the supreme victor, the Teacher, was quenched in Sena monastery;

His relics were distributed in various places.

The lineage of the Blessed One Phussa, the eighteenth.

21.

The Chronicle of Buddha Vipassī

1.

After Phussa, there was an Enlightened One, supreme among bipeds;

Named Vipassī, he arose in the world with vision.

2.

Having shattered all ignorance, he attained supreme enlightenment;

To set in motion the wheel of Teaching, he departed for the city of Bandhumatī.

3.

Having set in motion the wheel of Teaching, the leader enlightened both;

The first breakthrough was of an innumerable assembly.

4.

Again, the one of immeasurable fame proclaimed the truth there;

For eighty-four thousand, there was the second breakthrough.

5.

Eighty-four thousand went forth after the Enlightened One;

To those who had attained peace, possessing vision, taught the Teaching.

6.

Having heard him speaking in every aspect, showing the proximate cause;

They too went to the excellent Teaching, there was the third breakthrough.

7.

There were three gatherings of the great sage Vipassī;

Of those with taints destroyed, the stainless ones, those of peaceful mind, such as they are.

8.

The first assembly was of sixty-eight hundred thousand;

The second assembly was of a hundred thousand monks.

9.

The third assembly was of eighty thousand monks;

There in the midst of the group of monks, the Enlightened One shines forth.

10.

I was at that time a dragon king of great spiritual power;

Named Atula by name, meritorious and resplendent.

11.

Then, surrounded by many millions of dragons;

Playing celestial music, I approached the eldest in the world.

12.

Having approached the Enlightened One, Vipassī, leader of the world;

Studded with gems, pearls and jewels, adorned with all ornaments;

Having invited the King of the Teaching, I gave him a golden seat.

13.

That Buddha too declared of me, seated in the midst of the Community;

"Ninety-one aeons from now, he will become an Enlightened One.

14.

"The Truth Finder, having departed from delightful Kapila,

Having strived in striving, having performed austerities;

15.

"The Truth Finder having sat down at the foot of the Ajapāla tree;

Taking the milk-rice there, he will go to the Nerañjara.

16.

"That victor at the bank of the Nerañjara, gave the milk-rice;

By the prepared noble path, he will go to the foot of the Bodhi tree.

17.

"Then having circumambulated the unsurpassed ground of enlightenment;

At the foot of the Assattha tree, the greatly famous one will attain enlightenment.

18.

"His birth mother will be named Māyā;

His father will be named Suddhodana, he will be Gotama.

19.

"Taintless, free from lust, peaceful in mind, concentrated;

Kolita and Upatissa will be the chief disciples;

Named Ānanda as attendant, he will attend upon me, the victor.

20.

"Khemā and Uppalavaṇṇā will be the chief female disciples;

Taintless, free from lust, peaceful in mind, concentrated;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One is declared to be the Assattha.

"Citta and Hatthāḷavaka will be the chief male lay followers;

Nandamātā and Uttarā will be the chief female lay followers;

The life span is a hundred years, of that glorious Gotama.

22.

"Having heard these words...etc... we will be present before him."

23.

Having heard his word, I made my mind even more confident;

I determined on a further vow, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections.

24.

The city was named Bandhumatī, the noble was named Bandhuma;

The mother was named Bandhumatī, of Vipassī, the great sage.

25.

For eight thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Nanda, Sunanda and Sirimā, were the three supreme mansions.

26.

Forty-three thousand women, adorned women;

The woman was named Sudassanā, his son was named Samavattakkhandha.

27.

Having seen the four signs, he departed on a chariot vehicle;

For no less than eight months, the Victor engaged in striving.

28.

Being requested by Brahmā, Vipassī, leader of the world;

The Great Hero turned the wheel in the Deer Park, supreme among men.

29.

Khaṇḍa and one named Tissa, were the chief disciples;

Asoka was the attendant, of Vipassī, the great sage.

30.

Candā and Candamittā, were the chief female disciples;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One, is declared to be the Pāṭali.

31.

Punabbasumittā and Nāga, were the chief male supporters;

Sirimā and Uttarā, were the chief female supporters.

32.

Vipassī, Leader of the World, was eighty cubits tall;

His radiance streamed forth for seven yojanas all around.

33.

Eighty thousand years was the life span of the Buddha right then;

Remaining for that long, he led many people across.

34.

He freed many deities and human beings from bondage;

And pointed out the path and not-path to the remaining worldlings.

35.

Having shown the light, having taught the term of the Deathless;

Having blazed like a mass of fire, he was quenched with his disciples.

36.

The supreme spiritual power, supreme merit, and the blossomed characteristics;

All that has disappeared, indeed, all formations are empty.

37.

Vipassī, the noble victor, the Enlightened One, was quenched in Sumittārāma;

Right there his excellent monument, was raised seven yojanas high.

The lineage of the Blessed One Vipassī is the nineteenth.

22.

The Chronicle of the Enlightened One Sikhī

1.

After Vipassī, there was an Enlightened One, supreme among bipeds;

Named Sikhī was the victor, unequalled, unrivalled.

2.

Having crushed Māra's army, he attained supreme enlightenment;

He set in motion the wheel of Teaching, out of compassion for living beings.

3.

When the excellent conqueror Sikhi set in motion the wheel of Teaching,

For a hundred thousand crores, there was the first breakthrough.

4.

When that supreme among men, best of groups, taught the Teaching again,

For ninety thousand crores, there was the second breakthrough.

5.

When showing the twin wonder in the world with its deities,

For eighty thousand crores, there was the third breakthrough.

6.

There were three gatherings of the great sage Sikhi;

Of those with taints destroyed, the stainless ones, those of peaceful mind, such as they are.

7.

The first assembly was of a hundred thousand monks;

The second assembly was of eighty thousand monks.

8.

The third assembly was of seventy thousand monks;

Unsullied like a lotus, grown in the water.

9.

I was at that time a noble named Arindama;

I satisfied with food and drink the Community headed by the Enlightened One.

10.

Having given many excellent robes, countless crores of robes,

I gave a decorated elephant vehicle to the Enlightened One.

11.

Having created an elephant vehicle, I offered what was allowable;

I fulfilled my mental aspiration, permanently and firmly established.

12.

That Buddha too, Sikhī, Leader Supreme of the World, declared of me;

"Thirty-one aeons from now, he will become an Enlightened One.

13.

"Having departed from delightful Kapila... etc... we will be present before him."

14.

Having heard his word, I made my mind even more confident;

I determined on a further vow, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections.

15.

There was a city named Aruṇavatī, a noble named Aruṇa;

A birth mother named Pabhāvatī, of Sikhi the Great Sage.

16.

For seven thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Sucandaka, Giri, and Vasabha were the three supreme palaces.

17.

Twenty-four thousand women, adorned women;

The woman was named Sabbakāmā, the son was named Atula.

18.

Having seen the four signs, he departed on an elephant vehicle;

For eight months the supreme person practised striving.

19.

Being requested by Brahmā, Sikhī, the foremost leader of the world;

The Great Hero turned the wheel in the Deer Park, supreme among men.

20.

Abhibhū and Sambhava, were the chief disciples;

Khemaṅkara was the chief supporter of the great sage Sikhi.

21.

Sakhilā and Padumā, were the chief female disciples;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One, is declared to be the Puṇḍarīka.

22.

Sirivaḍḍha and Nanda, were the chief male supporters;

Cittā and Suguttā, were the chief female supporters.

23.

In height that Enlightened One, rose up seventy cubits;

Like a golden offering, possessing the thirty-two excellent characteristics.

24.

His body with a fathom-wide aura, shone day and night without interruption;

Light radiates in all directions, for three yojanas.

25.

Seventy thousand years was the life span of that great sage;

Remaining for that long, he led many people across.

26.

Having rained down the cloud of Teaching, having moistened those with deities,

Having led them to the security's end, he was quenched with his disciples.

27.

Endowed with features, with the thirty-two excellent characteristics;

All that has disappeared, indeed, all formations are empty.

28.

Sikhī, the supreme sage, the Enlightened One, was quenched in the Assārama;

Right there his excellent stupa rose up three yojanas.

The lineage of the Blessed One Sikhī, the twentieth.

23.

The Chronicle of the Enlightened One Vessabhū

1.

Right in that auspicious aeon, unequalled and unrivalled;

Named Vessabhū by name, he arose in the world as a leader.

2.

Indeed the fire of lust was ablaze, conquered by cravings then;

Like a bull elephant breaking its bondage, he attained supreme enlightenment.

3.

When Vessabhū, leader of the world, was setting in motion the wheel of Teaching;

The first breakthrough was of eighty thousand million.

4.

When the eldest in the world, bull among men, went wandering in the country;

The second breakthrough was of seventy thousand million.

5.

Dispelling wrong view, he performed a miracle;

Deities and humans gathered together, ten thousand in the world with its deities.

6.

Having seen the great wonder, marvellous and terrifying;

Both deities and human beings, sixty million awakened.

7.

There were three gatherings of the great sage Vessabhu;

Of those with taints destroyed, the stainless ones, those of peaceful mind, such as they are.

8.

The first assembly was of eighty thousand monks;

The second assembly was of seventy thousand monks.

9.

The third assembly was of sixty thousand monks;

Of the sons of the great sage, frightened by aging and other perils.

10.

I was at that time a noble named Sudassana;

Having invited the Great Hero, having given a worthy gift;

With food and drink and cloth, I honoured the Victor with the Community.

11.

Of that incomparable Enlightened One, the supreme wheel was set in motion;

Having heard the sublime Teaching, I delighted in the going forth.

12.

Having given great gifts, untiring day and night;

The going forth endowed with virtues, I went forth in the presence of the Victor.

13.

Endowed with virtuous conduct, concentrated in vows and virtuous behavior;

Searching for omniscience, I delight in the Victor's Dispensation.

14.

Having approached with faith and rapture, I pay homage to the Buddha, the Teacher;

Rapture arises in me, for the sake of enlightenment indeed.

15.

Knowing my unwavering mind, the Enlightened One said this:

"Thirty-one aeons from now, he will become an Enlightened One.

16.

"Having departed from delightful Kapila... etc... we will be present before him."

17.

Having heard his word, I made my mind even more confident;

I determined on a further vow, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections.

18.

The city named Anoma, a noble named Suppatita;

The mother named Yasavatī, of Vessabhu the great sage.

19.

For six thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Ruci, Suruci and Rativaḍḍhana were the three supreme palaces.

20.

Thirty thousand women, adorned women;

The woman was named Sucittā, his son was named Suppabuddha.

21.

Having seen the four signs, he departed by palanquin;

For six months the supreme person practised striving.

22.

Being requested by Brahmā, Vessabhū, leader of the world;

The Great Hero turned the wheel at Aruṇārāma, supreme among men.

23.

Soṇa and Uttara, were the chief disciples;

Upasanta by name was the attendant, of Vessabhu the great sage.

24.

Rāmā and Samālā, were the chief female disciples;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One, is declared to be the Mahāsāla.

25.

Sotthika and Rambha, were the chief male supporters;

Gotamī and Sirimā, were the chief female supporters.

26.

Sixty ratanas in height, like a golden pillar;

Light radiated from his body, like a fire on a mountain at night.

27.

Sixty thousand years was the life span of that great sage;

Remaining for that long, he led many people across.

28.

Having made the Teaching widespread, having divided the great mass of people;

Having established the ship of the Teaching, he was quenched with his disciples.

29.

All people's visible dwelling and posture;

All that has disappeared, indeed, all formations are empty.

30.

Vessabhū, the supreme victor, the Teacher, was quenched in the park of security;

His relics were distributed in various places.

The lineage of the Blessed One Vessabhū is the twenty-first.

24.

The Chronicle of the Buddha Kakusandha

1.

After Vessabhū, there was an Enlightened One, supreme among bipeds;

Named Kakusandha by name, immeasurable and difficult to approach.

2.

Having uprooted all existence, gone to perfection in conduct;

Like a lion breaking out of a cage, he attained supreme enlightenment.

3.

When Kakusandha, Leader of the World, was setting in motion the Wheel of Teaching;

For forty thousand crores there was the breakthrough of the Teaching.

4.

Having performed a twin miracle in the space of the sky;

He enlightened thirty thousand crores of deities and humans.

5.

When the lord of deities and spirit proclaimed the four truths;

The breakthrough of the Teaching was incalculable by counting.

6.

The Blessed One Kakusandha had one assembly;

Of those with taints destroyed, the stainless ones, those of peaceful mind, such as they are.

7.

Then there was an assembly of forty thousand;

Who had attained the plane of the tamed, with taints and defilements destroyed.

8.

I was at that time a noble named Khema;

Having given abundant gifts to the Truth Finder and the sons of the Conqueror.

9.

Having given bowl and robe, eye ointment and liquorice;

All this that is wished for, I prepare the best of the best.

10.

That Buddha too, Kakusandha, the Guide, declared of me;

"In this fortunate aeon, he will become an Enlightened One.

11.

"Having departed from delightful Kapila... etc... we will be present before him."

12.

Having heard his word too, I made my mind even more confident;

I determined on a further vow, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections.

13.

There was a city named Khemāvatī, I was then named Khema;

Searching for omniscience, I went forth in his presence.

14.

The brahmin Aggidatta was the father of the Enlightened One;

Visākhā by name was the mother of the Teacher Kakusandha.

15.

The great family of the Enlightened One dwelt there in the secure city;

The best and foremost of men, of high birth and great fame.

16.

For four thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Kāma, Kāmavaṇṇa, and Kāmasuddhi were the three supreme mansions.

17.

Thirty thousand women, adorned;

The woman was named Rocinī, his son was named Uttara.

18.

Having seen the four signs, he departed on a chariot vehicle;

For no less than eight months, the Victor engaged in striving.

19.

Being requested by Brahmā, Kakusandha the guide;

The Great Hero turned the wheel in the Deer Park, supreme among men.

20.

Vidhura and Sañjīva, were the chief disciples;

Buddhija by name was the attendant, of the Teacher Kakusandha.

21.

Sāmā and Campā by name, were the chief female disciples;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One, is declared to be the Sirīsa.

22.

Accuta and Sumana, were the chief male supporters;

Nandā and Sunandā, were the chief female supporters.

23.

Forty cubits tall, risen up was the great sage;

Golden light shone forth, ten yojanas all around.

24.

Forty thousand years was the life span of that great sage;

Remaining for that long, he led many people across.

25.

Having spread out the shop of the Teaching, for men and women with their deities;

Having roared like a lion's roar, he was quenched with his disciples.

26.

Endowed with speech of eight factors, unbroken and continuous;

All that has disappeared, indeed, all formations are empty.

27.

Kakusandha, the supreme victor, was quenched in the park of security;

Right there his supreme shrine rose a quarter league into the sky.

The chronicle of the Blessed One Kakusandha is the twenty-second.

25.

The Chronicle of the Buddha Koṇāgamana

1.

After Kakusandha, there was an Enlightened One, supreme among bipeds;

The Victor named Koṇāgamana, foremost in the world, bull among men.

2.

Having fulfilled the ten things, I crossed over the wilderness;

Having washed away all stain, I attained supreme enlightenment.

3.

When the Leader Koṇāgamana was setting in motion the Wheel of Teaching;

The first breakthrough was of thirty thousand million.

4.

And when performing the miracle, crushing other doctrines;

The second breakthrough was of twenty thousand million.

5.

Then having performed a transformation, the Victor went to the city of deities;

The Self-enlightened One dwells there on the yellowish stone slab.

6.

Teaching the seven treatises, that sage spent the rains retreat;

Then the third breakthrough was of a hundred thousand million.

7.

That deity of deities too had one assembly;

Of those with taints destroyed, the stainless ones, those of peaceful mind, such as they are.

8.

Then there was an assembly of thirty thousand monks;

Who had crossed over the floods, and broken through to death's end.

9.

I was at that time a noble named Pabbata;

Endowed with friends and ministers, having an army of infinite strength.

10.

Having gone to see the Fully Enlightened One, having heard the unsurpassed Teaching;

Having invited the Victor with the Community, having given gifts as desired.

11.

Fine cloth and Chinese silk, and silk cloth and woollen cloth too,

And golden sandals indeed, I gave to the disciples of the Teacher.

12.

That Buddha too declared of me, seated in the midst of the Community;

"In this fortunate aeon, he will become an Enlightened One.

13.

"Having departed from delightful Kapila... etc... we will be present before him."

14.

Having heard his word too, I made my mind even more confident;

I determined on a further vow, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections.

15.

Seeking omniscience, having given gifts to the supreme among men;

Having abandoned the great kingdom, I went forth near the Victor.

16.

There was a city named Sobhavatī, a noble named Sobha;

In that city dwelt, the great family of the Enlightened One.

17.

The brahmin Yaññadatta was the father of the Enlightened One;

The birth mother of the Teacher Koṇāgamana was named Uttarā.

18.

For three thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Tusita, Santusita, and Santuṭṭha were the three excellent palaces.

19.

Sixteen thousand women, adorned women;

The woman was named Rucigattā, the son was named Satthavāha.

20.

Having seen the four signs, he departed on an elephant vehicle;

For six months the supreme person practised striving.

21.

Being requested by Brahmā, Koṇāgamana, leader of the world;

The Great Hero turned the wheel in the Deer Park, supreme among men.

22.

Bhiyyasa and Uttara by name, were the chief disciples;

Sotthija by name was the attendant, of the Teacher Koṇāgamana.

23.

Samuddā and Uttarā, were the chief female disciples;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One, is declared to be the Udumbara.

24.

Ugga and Somadeva, were the chief male supporters;

Sīvalā and Sāmā, were the chief female supporters.

25.

In height that Enlightened One, rose up thirty cubits;

As gold in a furnace mouth, so was he adorned with rays.

26.

Thirty thousand years was the life span of the Buddha right then;

Remaining for that long, he led many people across.

27.

Having raised up a shrine of Teaching, adorned with the banner of Teaching,

Having made a garland of Teaching-flowers, he was quenched with his disciples.

28.

His people were of great splendour, illustrious proclaimers of the Teaching;

All that has disappeared, indeed, all formations are empty.

29.

The Enlightened One Koṇāgamana was quenched in the mountain monastery;

His relics were distributed in various places.

The lineage of the Blessed One Koṇāgamana is the twenty-third.

26.

The Chronicle of the Buddha Kassapa

1.

After Koṇāgamana, there was an Enlightened One, supreme among bipeds;

Named Kassapa by clan, the righteous king, the light-maker.

2.

Having given to beggars as a gift, the discarded family wealth, abundant food and drink;

Having given gifts to supplicants, having fulfilled my intention;

Like a bull breaking its enclosure, I attained supreme enlightenment.

3.

When Kassapa, Leader of the World, was setting in motion the Wheel of Teaching;

The first breakthrough was of twenty thousand million.

4.

When the Enlightened One wandered on tour in the world for four months;

The second breakthrough was of ten thousand million.

5.

Having performed the Twin Marvel, he proclaimed the element of knowledge;

The third breakthrough was of five hundred thousand million.

6.

In the delightful divine city of Sudhamma, there he proclaimed the Teaching;

The victor enlightened three hundred thousand million deities.

7.

At another teaching for the spirit of humans and deities;

The breakthroughs for these were beyond numerical reckoning.

8.

That deity of deities too had one assembly;

Of those with taints destroyed, the stainless ones, those of peaceful mind, such as they are.

9.

Then there was an assembly of twenty thousand monks;

Of those who had gone beyond existence, of such nature with shame and virtue.

10.

I was then a young man, well known as Jotipāla;

"A reciter, a master of the mantras, accomplished in the three Vedas;

11.

In characteristics and histories, gone to perfection in the true Teaching;

Skilled in earth and sky, accomplished in knowledge, without decay.

12.

The attendant of the Blessed One Kassapa, named Ghaṭikāra;

Reverential and deferential, quenched in the third fruition.

13.

Ghaṭīkāra took me and approached the Victor Kassapa;

Having heard his Teaching, I went forth in his presence.

14.

Having aroused energy, skilled in duties and observances;

I did not deteriorate in any way, I fulfilled the Victor's Dispensation.

15.

To the extent of the Buddha's word, the Victor's nine-factored Dispensation;

Having mastered all, I illuminated the Victor's Teaching.

16.

Having seen my wonder, that Enlightened One too declared;

"In this fortunate aeon, he will become an Enlightened One.

17.

"The Truth Finder, having departed from delightful Kapila,

Having strived in striving, having performed austerities;

18.

"The Truth Finder having sat at the foot of the Ajapāla tree;

Taking the milk-rice there, he will go to the Nerañjara.

19.

"Having eaten the milk-rice at the bank of the Nerañjara;

By the prepared noble path, he will go to the foot of the Bodhi tree.

20.

"Then having circumambulated the unsurpassed ground of enlightenment;

At the unconquered place, at the supreme enlightenment seat;

Having sat cross-legged, the greatly famous one will become enlightened.

21.

"His birth mother will be named Māyā;

His father will be named Suddhodana, he will be Gotama.

22.

"Taintless, free from lust, peaceful in mind, concentrated;

Kolita and Upatissa will be the chief disciples;

Named Ānanda as attendant, he will attend upon me, the victor.

23.

"Khemā and Uppalavaṇṇā will be the chief female disciples;

Taintless, peaceful in mind, free from lust, concentrated;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One is declared to be the Assattha.

24.

"Citto and Hatthāḷavaka will be the chief male lay supporters;

Nandamātā and Uttarā will be the chief female lay supporters."

25.

Having heard these words of the peerless great sage;

Delighted humans and deities, this indeed is the seed of enlightenment.

26.

Sounds of acclamation arise, they clap and laugh;

With reverential salutation they pay homage, the ten thousand worlds with their deities.

27.

"If we miss the Dispensation, of this Lord of the World;

In the future course of time, we will be present before him.

28.

"Just as human beings crossing a river, missing the opposite landing place;

Taking a lower landing place, cross over the great river.

29.

"Even so all of us, if we miss this Victor;

In the future course of time, we will be present before him."

30.

Having heard his word too, I made my mind even more confident;

I determined on a further vow, for the fulfillment of the ten perfections.

31.

Thus having wandered on, avoiding what is improper;

And I did what was difficult, for the sake of enlightenment indeed.

32.

There was a city named Bārāṇasī, and a noble named Kikī;

In that city dwelt, the great family of the Enlightened One.

33.

The brahmin Brahmadatta was the father of the Enlightened One;

A woman named Dhanavatī was the mother of Kassapa the great seer.

34.

For two thousand years he dwelt in the household;

Haṃsa, Yasa, and Sirinanda were the three excellent palaces.

35.

Forty-eight thousand women, adorned women;

The woman was named Sunandā, his son was named Vijitasena.

36.

Having seen the four signs, he departed by palace;

For seven days the supreme person practised striving.

37.

Being requested by Brahmā, Kassapa, leader of the world;

The Great Hero turned the wheel in the Deer Park, supreme among men.

38.

Tissa and Bhāradvāja, were the chief disciples;

Sabbamitta by name was the attendant of Kassapa the great seer.

39.

Anuḷā and Uruveḷā, were the chief female disciples;

The enlightenment tree of that Blessed One, is declared to be the Nigrodha.

40.

Sumaṅgala and Ghaṭikāra, were the chief male supporters;

Vicitasenā and Bhaddā, were the chief female supporters.

41.

In height that Enlightened One, rose up twenty fathoms;

Like a streak of lightning in space, like the moon when full.

42.

Twenty thousand years was the life span of that great sage;

Remaining for that long, he led many people across.

43.

Having created a lake of Teaching, having given virtue as ointment,

Having dressed in the cloth of Teaching, having distributed garlands of Teaching.

44.

Having placed the stainless mirror of the Teaching before the great assembly;

May some who aspire for Nibbāna see my adornment.

45.

Having given the armour of virtue, protected by the mail of meditation;

Having put on the shield of Teaching, having given the supreme equipment.

46.

Having given the shield of mindfulness, the sharp spear of knowledge;

Having given the excellent sword of Teaching, crushing the bonds of virtue.

47.

Having given the ornament of the three true knowledges, the garland of the four fruits;

Having given the ornament of the six direct knowledges and the adornment of Teaching-flowers,

48.

Having given the white parasol of the true Teaching that wards off evil;

Having created the flower of fearlessness, he was quenched with his disciples.

49.

For this is the perfectly enlightened one, immeasurable, hard to approach;

For this is the jewel of the Teaching, well proclaimed, inviting one to come and see.

50.

For this is the jewel of the Community, practising well, unsurpassed;

All that has disappeared, indeed, all formations are empty.

51.

The victor Teacher Mahākassapa was quenched in the Setabya monastery;

Right there his victor's shrine rose up a yojana high.

The lineage of the Blessed One Kassapa, the twenty-fourth.

27.

The Chronicle of the Buddha Gotama

1.

I am now the Enlightened One, Gotama, who brings glory to the Sakyans;

Having strived in striving, I attained supreme enlightenment.

2.

Being requested by Brahmā, I set in motion the Wheel of Teaching;

For eighteen crores there was the first breakthrough.

3.

Then further while teaching, in the assembly of humans and deities;

The second breakthrough was of an innumerable assembly.

4.

Right here, at that time, I exhorted my own offspring;

The third breakthrough was of an innumerable assembly.

5.

I had one gathering of disciples who were great seekers;

There was an assembly of twelve hundred and fifty monks.

6.

Shining and stainless, in the midst of the Community of monks;

I give all that is wished for, like a wish-fulfilling gem.

7.

For those desiring the fruit, seeking to abandon the desire for existence;

I proclaim the four truths, out of compassion for living beings.

8.

There was a breakthrough of the Teaching for thirty thousand;

The breakthrough for one or two was beyond numerical reckoning.

9.

Widespread, known to many, successful, flourishing, fully blossomed;

Here the Dispensation of the Sage of the Sakyans is well purified.

10.

Taintless, free from lust, peaceful in mind, concentrated;

Many hundreds of monks, all surrounded me always.

11.

Now those who at present, abandon human existence;

Those monks with minds not yet attained, trainees, are blamed by the wise.

12.

And praising the noble ones, people always delighting in the Teaching,

They will awaken, those mindful ones, gone to the stream of the round of rebirths.

13.

The city of Kapilavatthu was mine, King Suddhodana was my father;

My birth mother, was called Queen Maya.

14.

For twenty-nine years, I dwelt in the household life;

Rammo, Surammo, and Subhako, three supreme palaces.

15.

Forty thousand women, adorned women;

The woman named Bhaddakañcanā, the son named Rāhula.

16.

Having seen the four signs, I departed on a horse vehicle;

For six years I practised striving, I performed austerities.

17.

At Bārāṇasī in Isipatana, the wheel was set in motion by me;

I am the enlightened Gotama, the refuge for all living beings.

18.

Kolita and Upatissa, two monks who are chief disciples;

Ānanda by name is my attendant, dwelling in my presence;

Khemā and Uppalavaṇṇā, nuns who are chief female disciples.

19.

Citto and Hatthāḷavaka, chief attending male lay followers;

Nandamātā and Uttarā, chief attending female lay followers.

20.

At the root of the Assattha tree, I attained supreme enlightenment;

My fathom-wide radiance always, rises up sixteen cubits.

21.

A hundred years is the life span that exists at present;

Remaining for that long, I will help many people cross over.

22.

Having established the torch of the Teaching, the final awakening of people;

I too, before long, together with the Community of disciples;

Will attain final Nibbāna right here, like a fire through the extinction of nutriment.

23.

Those immeasurable powers, and these ten powers;

And this body endowed with qualities, adorned with the thirty-two excellent characteristics.

24.

Having illuminated the ten directions, like the six-rayed hundred-rayed sun;

All darkness will disappear, indeed, all formations are empty.

This is the twenty-fifth lineage of the Blessed One Gotama.

28.

Miscellaneous Chapter about the Buddhas

1.

In the incalculable aeon, there were four guides;

Taṇhaṅkara, Medhaṅkara, and also Saraṇaṅkara;

And the Enlightened One Dīpaṅkara, these Victors were in one aeon.

2.

After Dīpaṅkara, there was a leader named Koṇḍañña;

He alone in one aeon, led many people across.

3.

Of the Blessed One Dīpaṅkara, and of the Teacher Koṇḍañña;

The aeons between them are incalculable by counting.

4.

After Koṇḍañña, there was a leader named Maṅgala;

The aeons between them too are incalculable by counting.

5.

Maṅgala and Sumana, Revata and the sage Sobhita;

These Enlightened Ones too arose in one aeon, possessing vision, makers of light.

6.

After Sobhita, Anomadassī of great fame;

The aeons between them too are incalculable by counting.

7.

Anomadassī, Paduma, and also the leader Nārada;

These Enlightened Ones too arose in one aeon, those sages who dispelled darkness.

8.

After Nārada, the leader named Padumuttara,

Arose in one aeon, led many people across.

9.

Between the Blessed One Nārada and the teacher Padumuttara,

The aeons between them too are incalculable by counting.

10.

A hundred thousand aeons ago, there was one great sage;

Padumuttara, knower of the world, receiver of offerings.

11.

Thirty thousand aeons ago, there were two leaders;

Sumedha and Sujāta, before Padumuttara.

12.

Eighteen hundred aeons ago, there were three leaders;

Piyadassī, Atthadassī, and Dhammadassī were the guides.

13.

And after Sujāta, those Enlightened Ones, supreme among bipeds;

Those Enlightened Ones arose in the same aeon, unequalled in the world.

14.

Ninety-four aeons ago, there was one great sage;

That Siddhatta, knower of the world, the unsurpassed surgeon.

15.

Ninety-two aeons ago, there were two leaders;

Tissa and Phussa, Enlightened Ones, unequalled and matchless individuals.

16.

Ninety-one aeons ago, the leader named Vipassī;

That Enlightened One too, compassionate, freed beings from bondage.

17.

Thirty-one aeons ago, there were two leaders;

Sikhī and Vessabhū, unequalled and matchless individuals.

18.

In this fortunate aeon, there were three leaders;

Kakusandha, Koṇāgamana, and also the leader Kassapa.

19.

I am now an Enlightened One, and Metteyya too will be;

These five Enlightened Ones of mine, wise ones with compassion for the world.

20.

Of these kings of the Teaching, and many other millions;

Having shown that path, they were quenched with their disciples.

The Miscellaneous Chapter about the Buddhas is finished.

29.

Account of the Distribution of Relics

1.

The great Gotama, supreme victor, was quenched in Kusinārā;

His relics were distributed in various places.

2.

One for Ajātasattu, one in the city of Vesāli;

One in Kapilavatthu, and one in Allakappaka.

3.

One in Rāmagāma, one in Veṭhadīpaka;

One among the Pāveyyaka Mallans, and one in Kusinārā.

4.

The brahmin named Doṇa built a stupa for the urn;

The Moriyas with joyful minds built the stupa for the embers.

5.

Eight stupas for the relics, ninth the urn shrine;

The stupa for the embers was tenth, established at that time.

6.

The turban, the four teeth, and two collar-bone relics;

These seven elements remained intact, the rest of the elements were divided.

7.

Great ones, ones the size of mung beans, and middle-sized ones like broken rice grains;

Small ones the size of mustard seeds, and elements of various beauty.

8.

The great ones are golden-coloured, and the middle-sized are pearl-coloured;

The small ones are bud-coloured, measuring sixteen doṇas of clay.

9.

The great ones are five nāḷis, five nāḷis are the middle ones;

The small ones are six nāḷis indeed, all these are relics.

10.

The turban in the island of Sri Lanka, and the left eye-ball in the brahmā world;

And the right eye in Sri Lanka, all these are established.

11.

One tooth was in the city of the Thirty-three, one was in the city of dragons;

One in the domain of Gandhāra, one with the king of Kaliṅga.

12.

Forty equal teeth, hair and body hair in their entirety;

The deities took them one by one, throughout the universe.

13.

In Vajirā are the Blessed One's bowl, staff and robe;

The inner robe in a family home, and the carpet in Kapilavatthu.

14.

In the city of Pāṭaliputta, the belt was made;

In Campā the bathing cloth, and woollen cloth in Kosala.

15.

The ochre robe in the brahmā world, and the head-wrap in the city of the Thirty-Three;

The sitting cloth in Avanti, and the spread in that region then.

16.

The fire-sticks in Mithilā, the water-strainer in Videha;

The razor and needle-case too, in the city of Indapatta then.

17.

The remaining requisites, in the frontier region of Aparantaka;

Used by the sage, people made them then.

18.

There was a distribution of relics, of the great sage Gotama;

Out of compassion for living beings, it was thus in ancient times.
